
Kyrenia University Faculty of Law Deputy Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan, who received the “Social Sciences Research Award” at the Turkish Journalists Association Sedat Simavi Awards with her book “Unjust Provocation: A Manhood Right”, will address the issue of “unjust provocation” that we encounter in femicides at a conference to be held at Near East University.
At the event organized by the Near East University Gender Research and Application Center (TOCAM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan will discuss the process of her book’s emergence and how the concept of “unjust provocation” affects judicial processes in femicide cases in Turkey. Prepared using the court ethnography method and revealing gender inequalities in the legal system, the book is considered an important resource for ensuring social justice.
As part of the event to be held on Tuesday, February 18 at 12:30 in the Near East University Grand Library Hall 4, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan will also sign her book. The event, which is free and open to the public, aims to raise awareness on gender justice.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. İzlem Kanlı, Head of the Near East University Gender Research and Application Center (TOCAM), emphasized the importance of the event in terms of gender equality and justice relationality and said, “The ‘unjust provocation’ reduction in femicide cases is not only a legal discussion topic, but also a major issue in terms of ensuring justice and protecting gender equality.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanlı stating that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan’s meticulously written book “Unjust Provocation: A Manhood Right” makes gender inequalities in the legal system visible and provides an important perspective on how a fair trial process should be, also said; “As the Near East University Gender Research and Application Center, we see supporting academic studies that contribute to the search for gender-based justice and raising awareness on this issue as one of our most important responsibilities. The application of law in a way that protects women’s right to life is one of the cornerstones of building an egalitarian society.
