In the “Long COVID” symposium held by the Near East University Faculty of Medicine with the participation of specialist physicians and academicians, long-term side effects that occur in individuals who have had COVID-19 and may affect many body systems were discussed.

Near East University Faculty of Medicine Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer and Sakarya University Faculty of Medicine Head of Medical Microbiology and Virology Department Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altındiş discussed COVID-19 in many aspects at the “Long COVID (Prolonged COVID) symposium held at the Near East University Medical Faculty Hospital under the co-chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altındiş.

At the symposium, which was organized with the participation of specialist physicians and many academics who are successful in their fields, the side effects that occur in individuals who have had COVID and may affect many systems were discussed. The symposium coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aslı Aykaç and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören was completed in three sessions.

In the symposium, which was broadcast live on the YouTube channel of Near East University, the clinical, microbiological diagnosis, economic, cultural, demographic and political aspects of COVID-19 were discussed. In the symposium, besides the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the world, long-term effects of the disease in areas such as infectious diseases, musculoskeletal system, otolaryngology, pediatrics, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, pulmonary and extrapulmonary involvement and diabetes were discussed.

Near East University Faculty of Medicine Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer made the opening speech titled “Short Story of Prolonged COVID-19” at the “Long COVID” symposium that he chaired. Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer, “The term prolonged COVID was first used in May 2020 in Lombardy, Italy, by Dr. Elisa Perego on Twitter. This hashtag caught the attention of social media and then the World Health Organization within a few moments. Then, on August 21, 2022, it was started to be used by the World Health Organization to describe long-term symptoms of COVID-19.

Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer stated that it was thought that the symptoms of COVID-19 would be short-lived when it was first heard in the world, but that despite the long duration of the pandemic and the negative laboratory tests in patients who had Covid 19 infection, there were long-term ongoing symptoms in the affected people.

Stating that during the pandemic process, it began to be called by many different but similar names such as Prolonged COVID, Chronic COVID, Chronic COVID Syndrome, Post-Acute COVID-19 syndrome, Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer shared the relevant data about COVID-19, the symptoms of which are seen in people who have had the disease, with the contributions of the branch physicians related to the multidisciplinary approach. Prof. Dr. Süer said, “We will continue to evaluate all the effects of COVID-19 by following all the findings as usual. I hope that in the new year all these processes will be over and we will return to our normal lives completely.
