The “Lefkara Embroidery Workshop” was organized in collaboration with the Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education and HASDER.
A meaningful cultural project introducing Cypriot handicrafts was undertaken in collaboration with the Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education, Department of Art Teaching and Social Sciences Teaching and the Folk Arts Foundation and Association HASDER Handicrafts Center.
Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education prospective teachers attended the Lefkara Embroidery Workshop organized at the HASDER Nicosia Handicrafts Center. The course carried out on Lefkara work, which is a legacy of the Cypriot culture from the Venetian period inherited from the 14th century, provided the prospective teachers with the opportunity to get to know and learn traditional handicrafts.
With its roots dating back to the Venetian period, Lefkara work engaged the participants in a historical journey and created an important platform for the transfer of cultural heritage to future generations. The event, which carried the traces of the past to the future, attracted great attention. The event ended by the Dean of the Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Umut Akçıl, presenting certificates to the participants.
Prof. Dr. Umut Akçıl: “It is very important to introduce an art form with deep historical roots such as Lefkara work to students from different countries.”
Emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting Cypriot culture, Prof. Dr. Umut Akçıl emphasized that such out-of-school learning experiences offer unique opportunities for students. “Introducing traditional values such as handicrafts, not only locally but also internationally, contributes to the acceptance of these values as a universal cultural heritage. Introducing an art form with deep historical roots such as Lefkara work to students from different countries allows them to both get to know the Cypriot culture more closely and develop a comparative understanding with their own culture,” said Prof. Dr. Umut Akçıl, thanking the instructors who organized this meaningful event and the HASDER Handicraft Center for their contributions.
Aysel Kuburlu: “An important gain for young teacher candidates!”
HASDER member Aysel Kuburlu made a statement at the event and expressed her belief that such events, which aim to carry the values of Cypriot culture into the future, provide an important gain for young teacher candidates. “Such trainings not only reinforce the commitment of teacher candidates to Cypriot culture, but also prepare them to act as a bridge to transfer these values to future generations,” said Kuburlu, adding that the introduction of traditional arts such as Lefkara handicrafts provides the participants with the opportunity to take a historical journey.
