Near East University Hospital Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel made important warnings about what to do to minimize the risk of heart attack.
Heart attacks stand out as the most common cause of sudden deaths that occur without any prior warning. Near East University Hospital Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel warns that heart diseases can be largely prevented with a conscious lifestyle and regular health checks.
Although the symptoms of a heart attack may vary from person to person, the most common symptoms include a feeling of tightness, burning or pressure in the chest, pain radiating to the left arm, jaw, neck or back, shortness of breath, dizziness and fainting, cold sweats, nausea and vomiting. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel emphasized that it is vital to apply to the nearest health institution without wasting time if one or more of these symptoms are felt.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel says that sudden heart attacks can develop without any prior symptoms and can have fatal consequences. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel says, “Especially in individuals with coronary artery disease, sudden formation of vascular occlusion can cause the heart muscle not to receive enough oxygen and can cause irreversible damage within minutes. Such sudden attacks can cause the person to lose their life if not intervened. Therefore, it is of great importance for individuals with risk factors to have their heart health monitored regularly and to act quickly in any suspicious situation.”
What should be done during a heart attack?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel reminds that “Acting correctly and quickly during a heart attack can be life-saving,” and says, “In such a case, the most important step is to first call the emergency service and notify the professional healthcare team. The person should not move as much as possible and try to remain calm. It is recommended to wait in a sitting position in order not to strain the body. CPR should be applied to a person who is unconscious and whose pulse cannot be felt, and if the person is not breathing, CPR should be continued until the emergency team arrives.”
Most heart diseases can be diagnosed early thanks to preventive measures and regular check-ups. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel emphasizes that especially those with a family history of heart disease, those with high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol problems, those who smoke and drink alcohol, those who lead stressful and irregular lives, and those who are obese or have a sedentary lifestyle should undergo regular cardiological examinations. Routine cardiological check-ups include ECG, effort test, and blood tests. Thus, possible risks can be detected early and necessary precautions can be taken.
Is it possible to protect yourself from heart diseases?
Emphasizing the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent heart diseases, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel warns, “A Mediterranean-type diet should be adopted in the diet, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats should be consumed. At least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week protects heart health. Tobacco products and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided. Since chronic stress can negatively affect heart health, stress management techniques such as meditation and yoga should be applied. Quality and sufficient sleep is vital for heart health.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel, who stated that “It is necessary to take preventive health measures and not neglect regular doctor check-ups to protect against heart diseases,” emphasized; “Sudden heart attacks can develop suddenly without any preliminary symptoms and can have fatal consequences. Thus, it is of great importance for individuals with risk factors to have their heart health monitored regularly and to act quickly in any suspicious situation.”
