The 21st Cyprus Theater Festival, carried out this year with the cooperation of the Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta municipalities, continues to bring 11 plays to Cyprus. Near East University, which supports the festival as a hall sponsor, is hosting four of these plays. The Near East University Campus, which is the most important art center in the region with the Cyprus Museum of Modern Art, Cyprus Car Museum, Cyprus Herbarium and Natural History Museum located on its campus, as well as 475 personal solo and group exhibitions, reliefs decorating the structures on the campus and over 250 open-air sculptures, will once again host the giants of theater this week.

Having the largest hall in Cyprus with a capacity of approximately 800 people, the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center is preparing to open the curtains for three major plays in the remaining days of June after hosting the opening of the 21st Cyprus Theater Festival on May 20 with the play “The Price of Slavery.”

This week, Near East University will host Moda Sahne’s play “The Maids” for the first time on Sunday, June 15 (today). Adapted from Jean Genet’s striking text, this psychological drama confronts the audience with the dark and twisted aspects of human nature.

On June 19-20, Game Workshop’s play “Bald Diva” will be staged at Near East University. This play, which perfectly blends abstraction and absurdism from Eugène Ionesco’s unique pen, also draws attention with its giant cast. The cast of the play, which takes place in the living room of an English bourgeois family, consists of Haluk Bilginer, Zuhal Olcay, Yiğit Özşener, Özlem Zeynep Dinsel, Gözde Kırgız and Kıvanç Kılınç.

On June 26, “Short Reign”, which will be staged by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality City Theater, will meet its audience again at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center. Written by John Steinbeck, the play is set against the backdrop of a timeless France that is trying to resolve a governance crisis where democratic solutions have been exhausted by re-declaring the monarchy. The cast of the play consists of Murat Liman, Nihal Türkseven Erten, Mehmet Eren Topçak, Tuba Bayram, Yüksel Hakverdi, Faruk Oğur and Aykan Yılmaz.
