A Near East University supported scientific research project Is being conducted on the marine pollution in the Mediterranean Region
Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özge Özden Fuller said, "The first concrete and important data was reached within the framework of "Spatial-temporal detection and observation of marine wastes along the northern Cyprus coasts".

The press information given by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University reveals that this is a project financed by the Near East University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit and conducted in collaboration with Exeter University Cornwall Campus. Within the scope of the project, it is aimed to determine level of marine waste composition, to define spatial-temporal trends, and to produce recommendations for future marine pollution studies in the Mediterranean region. So far it was found out that the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most polluted seas with anthropogenic wastes.

The research is carried out together with Exeter University ...
Three academicians from Near East University and two academicians from Exeter University in the UK are contributing to the project. Professor of Conservation Science at Exeter University, Prof Dr. Brendan Godley stated that the progeny are geographically wide and contain spatiotemporal variability and are long enough to provide statistical power for subsequent analysis.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özge Özden Fuller; "Eastern Mediterranean can be one of the most polluted seas due to regional waste"
Project Director from Near East University Faculty of Architecture, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özge Özden Fuller said that the project aims to determine the composition of marine waste, to define spatial-temporal tendencies and to produce recommendations for future marine pollution research in the Mediterranean region.

Fuller said there is evidence that the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the world's most polluted seas associated with anthropogenic wastes. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fuller said, "This area has not been worked up sufficiently and our research has the potential to have knowledge of marine science throughout the Mediterranean region. Our project emphasizes the downstream effects on Northern Cyprus shores as a consequence of poor waste management in other neighboring countries. We also encountered medical wastes that could reach the North Cyprus coasts from other neighboring countries during project investigations"
