
The “Academic Year Opening and White Shirt Ceremony” at Near East University Faculty of Medicine was held at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center.
Doctors of future who stepped into the new education term performed the traditional ritual that symbolizes both their professional commitment and responsibility by wearing their white coats at the ceremony. The ceremony began with a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emine Kıvanç Öztuğ and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neriman Soykunt from the Department of Music Education at Near East University performed a musical recital. The opening speeches of the ceremony, which saw intense participation, were made by Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Umut Aksoy and Near East University Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan.
After the speeches, After reciting the Student Oath together withProf. Dr. Gamze Mocan, all first-year students put on their white coats. Following the recitation of the Student Oath, the first lecture on “Monkey Flower” was given by Prof. Dr. Özen Aşut, a faculty member at the Public Health Department of the Near East University Faculty of Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Umut Aksoy: “Medicine is always based on science, reason and ethics.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Umut Aksoy said, “The white coat you will wear is not just a symbol; it is an expression of ethical values and the responsibility to serve humanity. Every time you put on this coat, you will remember how valuable it is to touch human life.” Prof. Dr. Aksoy stated that medicine is always based on science, reason and ethical values.
Stating that Near East University is an institution that hosts more than 20 thousand students from 143 different countries and that it always continues its search for excellence in science, Prof. Dr. Aksoy stated that the Near East University Faculty of Medicine was established as the first medical faculty on the island and that it has a contemporary education approach and an experienced staff who are experts in their fields.
Stating that students should give importance to human values as much as scientific knowledge throughout their medical education, Prof. Dr. Aksoy said, “The purpose of medicine is shaped not only by knowledge but also by love for humanity and ethical values. Science, reason and ethics always lie at the foundation of medicine. Modern medicine has achieved the greatest developments in human history thanks to its commitment to these values.” Addressing the students, Prof. Dr. Aksoy said; “Dear students, we will always be with you throughout this journey. We live in an age where it is easy to access information, but what is important is to use this information correctly. It is our greatest responsibility to contribute to your development of this skill.”

Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan: “I wholeheartedly believe that you will honor the white coat, which is the symbol of honesty and purity.”
Starting her speech by reminding the purpose of the Near East University Faculty of Medicine, Dean of the Near East University Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan said, “Our aim is to train highly qualified medical doctors who are knowledgeable, honest, committed to both medical and universal ethical values, respectful to their patients, creative, questioning, inquisitive, and have internalized Atatürk’s principles and revolutions.”
Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan drew attention to the fact that the field of medicine is a field that is constantly full of new developments and inventions, and where intense competition is experienced at national and international levels, and said, “Thus, we carry out our continuous medical education programs at an intense pace and successfully.” Stating that there are 39 departments in the faculty, Prof. Dr. Mocan stated that the hospital, equipped with the latest technological diagnostic and treatment devices, has been deemed worthy of many awards thanks to its organized infrastructure, quality service approach and traceable registration system.
Addressing the families of the students, Prof. Dr. said, “Your children are also our children. You raised them. We will provide them with a profession and expand their worldview and horizons.” Mocan addressed to the students and said; “I have endless faith that many selfless, honest and dedicated physicians who idolize great medical people will emerge from among you. I wholeheartedly believe that you will honor the white coat, which is the symbol of honesty and purity.”
