Derviş Zaim’s “Tavuri” documentary to meet the viewers!

Master Director Derviş Zaim’s “Tavuri” documentary will meet the public at a screening to be held at the Near East University Grand Library on Thursday, February 27 at 14:00.

The Department of Film Production and Publishing of the Near East University Faculty of Communication invites moviegoers to a special event. Directed by Cypriot Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derviş Zaim and adapted from a true life story, the documentary “Tavuri” will meet the viewers at the Near East University Grand Library on Thursday, February 27 at 14:00. The screening, which will be open to the public and free of charge, will also be followed by a talk with the director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derviş Zaim.

The documentary, which had its world premiere at the “True-False Film Festival” in the USA, tells the life story of Mustafa Serttaş, a famous swindler known by his nickname “Tavuri.” The story of Tavuri, who was also Derviş Zaim’s childhood friend, was completed after eight years of meticulous work. The shootings were carried out in the TRNC and England.

The documentary, which brings Tavuri’s daily life in prison and outside to the big screen, allows him to tell his life in his own words, while also offering a deep narrative that questions society’s perspective on the concepts of crime, morality, justice and fate. After the screening, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derviş Zaim, who is also a faculty member at the Film Production and Broadcasting Department of the Faculty of Communication of Near East University, will share the production process of the film and the details behind the scenes with the participants.

Emphasizing that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derviş Zaim shares his experiences with students in the courses he gives at the Film Production and Broadcasting Department of the Faculty of Communication of Near East University, Dean of the Faculty of Communication of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap said, “ It is a great gain for us that Derviş Zaim, our esteemed director, who has brought important productions to Turkish cinema, shares his experiences with the youth at our university. We aim to introduce the Tavuri documentary to our people through the event we have organized.”

Emphasizing that success in the cinema and media sector is possible not only with technical knowledge but also by feeding on the experiences of masters, Prof. Dr. Kasap said, “Such events help our students both to put theoretical knowledge into practice and to get to know the dynamics of the sector closely.” Prof. Dr. Kasap said, “Organizing such inspiring meetings for the directors, scriptwriters and producers of the future is a responsibility for us. We are expecting all our people, together with our students, to the screening.”
