Cyprus Turkish Human and Clinical Genetics Association was founded under the leadership of Near East University academics

Cyprus Turkish Human and Clinical Genetics Association, which was established under the leadership of Near East University academicians, started its activities by holding its first ordinary general assembly meeting. The members of the Board of Directors, the Supervisory Board and the Disciplinary Board of the association were also determined at the general assembly meeting held in Hall 101 of the Near East University Hospital, which was registered in the associations’ registry by the Nicosia District Governorate on April 19, 2022.

At the Council Board chaired by Near East University Faculty of Medicine Founding Dean Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan, the Representative of the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association, Dr. Fadime Tülücü and health technician Nevrez Köreken were also elected as members.

Near East University Genetic Diagnosis Laboratory Supervisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören was elected as the chairman of the Board of Directors, and Prof. Dr. Rasime Kalkan, Exp. Hüseyin Öncün, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Fahrioğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pnar Tulay, Dr. Gulten Tuncel and specialist Hakan Aytaçoğlu were elected as members of the board.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören: “We invite all our colleagues who want to work under the umbrella of the association to become members of our association.”
Founding President of the Cyprus Turkish Society of Human and Clinical Genetics Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören made statements about the establishment purpose of the association; “The primary purpose of our association is to bring together people working in the fields of human genetics, clinical genetics and other molecular sciences to address occupational problems, to ensure solidarity among members, and to work to increase the knowledge and awareness level of society on genetic diseases,” and added that the prevention of unauthorized people who conduct studies and consultancy in this field, and the supervision of hospitals and laboratories that perform molecular diagnostic tests using genetic material will be among the priority areas of work of the association.

Stating that legal legislation on genetics should be established in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergören said, “Informing the ministry about genetic and molecular applications when necessary, contributing to the creation of laws and regulations, ensuring the establishment of necessary commissions and units within the government in this field and leading the establishment of disease control and protection centers are among the important objectives of our association.” Assoc. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören invited all his colleagues who want to work under the umbrella of the association to become members of the association.
