Laboratory studies conducted by Near East University researchers have revealed that the essential oil obtained from the rosemary plant grown in Cyprus has functional activity in liver cancer.

Cyprus, the largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia, is one of the richest islands in the region with the plant species it hosts. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), which grows in Cyprus, is one of these plants. The scientific study published by Near East University researchers in the South African Journal of Botany, one of the scientific publications with a high degree of effectiveness (Q2), investigated the functional effectiveness of the essential oil obtained from the rosemary plant grown in Cyprus against cancer.

Near East University researchers found that rosemary essential oil was effective on liver cancer, one of the common cancer types, with their laboratory studies. This finding reveals that molecules to be obtained from rosemary essential oil may offer hope for the treatment of liver cancer.

The research, conducted and completed with the contributions of Near East University researchers Prof. Dr. Seda Vatansever, Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer, Assist. Prof. Dr. Duygu Yiğit Hanoğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eda Becer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergül Mutlu Altundağ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Güran and Selma Ustürk, stands out as the first research on the rosemary plant grown in Cyprus. The study includes data on the chemical content and biological activity of the essential oil obtained from the rosemary plant, which grows in Cyprus and is widely used among the people.

Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ: “The study, which our researchers created by combining their expertise, reveals that the essential oil obtained from the rosemary plant grown in Cyprus may be hope for the treatment of liver cancer.”
Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, while congratulating his colleagues for the important research they have conducted, emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary studies that scientists with expertise in different fields come together and carry out. Reminding that Prof. Dr. Seda Vatansever stands out with her studies in areas such as stem cells and clinical use, cancer mechanisms, cell death and analysis, histological uses of different techniques, and infertility, Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ said “Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer and Assist. Prof. Dr. Duygu Yiğit Hanoğlu also have carried out important studies in the fields of chemistry, botany and pharmacy. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ also said, “The study, which our researchers have created by combining their expertise, reveals that the essential oil obtained from the rosemary plant grown in Cyprus may be hope for the treatment of liver cancer.”
