Near East University, the only institution to win a European Cup in women’s basketball alongside Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, has won 16 championships in various sports this year, bringing its total cup count to 594.
Nar East University, ranked among the world’s best universities by numerous higher education ranking organizations, extends its academic success to the sports arena. In addition to winning the FIBA Women’s European Cup in 2017, Near East University also won the Turkish league championship, the Presidential Cup, and the Turkey Cup, bringing all its cups to its museum. This year, Near East University has won 16 championships in various sports, bringing its total cup count to 594. Of the 594 cups held in the Near East University museum, 391 are championship cups.
Near East University once again demonstrated its commitment to sports during the 2024-2025 season, achieving success in numerous branches of interuniversity competitions and club teams.
Having earned a total of 16 championships in various age categories during the 2024-2025 season, Near East University achieved significant success in basketball, badminton, swimming, cycling, footsal, and bowling. The university’s rising performance in these areas demonstrated not only its academic development but also the importance it places on sports and its strong infrastructure.
Footsal, bowling, and cycling reign supreme!
In the 2024-2025 interuniversity competitions, Near East University won championships in basketball, badminton, swimming, cycling, footsal, and bowling. The women’s and men’s footsal teams, as well as the women’s and men’s bowling teams, completed the season in top form. The men’s cycling team also crowned the university’s success by winning the championship. The men’s basketball and handball teams came second, and the women’s volleyball team completed the season in the second place. The men’s football team, men’s and women’s swimming teams, men’s and women’s table tennis teams, and men’s billiards and mixed badminton teams completed the season in the third place.

Near East University teams demonstrated outstanding performance in all age categories in basketball, winning championships in the U12, U16, U18, and senior basketball teams. The women’s basketball team also achieved significant rankings in the U12 and U14 categories, coming second and third, respectively. The men’s handball team achieved second, third, and fourth places in various age groups, while the men’s volleyball team came third in the U12 category.
Striking championships in swimming and badminton!
The swimming teams won numerous championships in the younger age categories and continued to break records in the individual category. They also achieved championships in the U14 men’s category and also won championships in the U16 and U18 women’s categories. In the Badminton Stars League, the U14 and U16 teams returned with championships. In the Badminton Youth League, Near East University won two championships, once again demonstrating the importance it places on the development of young athletes.
Strong infrastructure, strong results!
Behind Near East University’s success in sports lies the robust infrastructure on campus. The campus boasts the first and only Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool in Northern Cyprus. Equipped to international standards, the RA25 Sports Hall can host basketball, handball, volleyball, and badminton competitions, as well as ceremonies and concerts thanks to its special sound system. The Near East University campus also features outdoor sports facilities for football, basketball, and tennis. The Near East Sports Tower, boasting a 6,000-square-meter indoor area spread over nine floors and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, offers both individual and group lessons in a variety of disciplines, including fitness, cardio, step, aerobics, Pilates, yoga, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Special dance courses for children and adults also support physical development and coordination skills. All these opportunities are offered in hygienic environments in designated areas for women and children.
The NEU Sports Academy, established by Near East University with the goal of discovering and training professional elite athletes, plays a significant role in these achievements. The NEU Sports Academy continues to train elite athletes in basketball, dance, volleyball, handball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, swimming, and wrestling.
