By winning in France, the Near East University left the door ajar for the EuroCup Semi-Final

For the first leg of the EuroCup Women Quarter-Final, the Near East University faced the French team ESBVA-LM on Tuesday 7 March 2017 and won the match with a score of 67-68. The return leg will be played at Caferağa Sport Saloon in Istanbul on Friday 10 March. The Near East University Women’s Basketball Team will advance to EuroCup Semi-Final if they will win the match.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, the first leg of the EuroCup Women Quarter-Final was played at the Villeneuve d' Ascq, Palacium in France and the Near East University took the court with Courtney Vandersloot, Kayla McBride, Essence Carson, Yelena Leuchanka, and Angelica Robinson. The Near East University paved the way towards winning step by step despite the strong support and press of the home-team's fans.

The home team started the match with a very high tempo and outscored 9-0 in the first 6 minutes of the first period. Following the time-out, Quanitra Hollingsworth scored NEU’s basket. However, she had to leave the match due to her injury. NEU’s versatile players picked themselves up and began to fightback with tough defense and domination in rebounds. The team pointers such as Kayla McBride and Courtney Vandersloot began to get inside the paint and drive to the basket. Through a serial lead, the Near East University tied the score to 11-11 in the 13th minute of the first period. The first period in which both teams experienced too many turnovers ended with the win of ESBVA-LM, 22-21. The second period was the scene of tough fights. ESBVA Lillie scored 15 points in this period while NEU scored 10 points. Thus ESBVA Lillie completed the first half with a score of 37-31.

During the third period, both teams fought toe to toe to dominate the match. Tough zone defenses and rebound challenges were very striking. Each team scored 15 points and the period ended with a score of 52-46. The tough defense, domination in rebounds and strong team spirit of the Near East University was very striking at the last period of the match; NEU pointers scored 22 points while the home team could score 15 points. Upon the final whistle the Near East University made the semi-final door ajar by winning the match with a score of 67-68.

The return leg of the EuroCup Semi – Final will take place at Caferağa Sport Saloon in Istanbul on Friday 10 March. The winning team will be determined by aggregate score, the sum of the scores of two legs. If the Near East University's aggregate score is more than its rival, the Near East University will advance to EuroCup Women Semi-Final.
