Best Research Awards goes to Near East University…

Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel: “We are progressing on our path to be 4th generation university through our mission in freedom in science…”
Near East University researchers received “Research Awards” during 2018 at 7 international, 1 national congresses for their researches conducted in the fields of Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary, Nursing, Mathematics and Psychology.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Near East University researchers were awarded for their verbal and poster presentations at 1st International; 3rd International Birth Preparation Education and Congress; 54th National Psychiatry Congress; 2nd International Veterinary Microbiology Congress; 38th International Congress on Turkish Microbiology; 23rd Meeting on Herbal Pharmaceutical Raw Materials; 2nd International Cell Death Research Congress; 7th EKMUD International Congress and Workshop on Neurodegeneration/Neuroregeneration.  Furthermore, the NEU researchers also made a new discover and discovered a new spider species in Northern Cyprus and made a great contribution to world literature.

Günsel, along with Vice Rector of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ hosted and congratulated the Near East University Academicians who were awarded. Making a speech on the issue, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University Assoc Prof Dr İrfan S. Günsel and Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ emphasised the significance of being a university which freely makes contribution to science.

It was stated that vice Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ initially made a speech and stressed that their success was based on interdisciplinary cooperation and support given to research by the university authority. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ expressed that during 2018, they had achieved success in eight congresses and that this was a result of the support provided and the significance given to young researchers.

In addition to the above, Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ stated that they were determined to provide full support to young researchers and increase the number of postgraduate students so as to proceed to be a campus where it is contributed to science.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel emphasised that universities are autonomous teaching and research centres seeking, producing, transmitting and spreading information and knowledge for the benefit of the public. He added that the success achieved was due to the ownership young scientists took of their university.

In addition to the above, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel stated that they, as a university, were obliged to provide a scientifically consistent and qualified education to the community and the world in general. Furthermore, he added that researchers were the ones who kept a country continue developing; such that although the main source of income of the country was tourism, the success of the Near East University researchers actually contributed to the prestige and the promotion of the country.

Moreover, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel also touched upon the importance of people having a sense of belonging to a place and that it is possible to make one’s mark through publications made. In other words, he stated that they were a strong university and people would want to be a part of a strong place. He said that as they got stronger and stronger, they drew more and more people; continuing to grow like an ‘avalanche’.

It was pointed out that subsequent to the statements made, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel congratulated each of the researchers who were awarded due to their scientific studies one by one. He expressed that each award received by the researchers of a university was an indication of how well a university was functioning. Moreover, he stated that Near East University was continuing on its path to be a 4th Generation University. With the European championships and patents achieved, researches and naming a new species, Near East University had become a university which is preferred by many.

National/International Research Awards…
Prof. Dr. Gülşen Vural and Assist Prof Dr Dilek Sarpkaya Güder together received 1st International; 3rd International Birth Preparation Education and Congress, first prize in oral presentation on Education on Preparation for Birth and the Effect of Plans on Birth. Assist Prof Dr Güner Ekiz won the Oral Presentation First Prize in Herbal Medicine Raw Materials Meeting on II Astragalus Cycloates' Biotransformation of Endofic Fungi XXIII.

The joint work of Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Prof. Dr. Evren Hınçal, Assoc. Prof. Dr.  Kaya Süer, Assist Prof Dr. Bilgen Kaymakamzade, Research Assistant Farouk Tijani Saad, Research Assistant Nazife Sultanoğlu titled as “Using a Mathematical Model to Analyse a HIV Epidemic in Cyprus” received The Best Research and Best Oral Presentation award.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerem Teralı was given the Best Oral Presentation at the 2nd International Cell Death Research Congress; whereas Prof. Dr. Mehmet Çakıcı, Prof. Dr. Ebru Çakıcı and Assist Prof Dr. Meryem Karaaziz were given the 2nd Runner-up Award at the 54th Psychiatry Congress for their work on Prevalence of Dissociative Symptoms in Adult Individuals, Relationship with Risk Factors and Accreditation in TRNC.

Also, Prof. Dr. Selim Aslan, Assist Prof Dr. İsfendiyar Darbaz, Assist Prof. Dr. Osman Ergene and assist Prof Dr. Hüban Göçmen joint study on Investigation of Breast Health and Milk Quality Parameters in Damascus Goats of Northern Cyprus in Postpartum Period received the Best Oral Presentation at 2nd International Veterinary Microbiology Congress

Prof. Dr. Nedim Çakır, Assoc Prof Dr. Kaya Süer, Assoc Prof Dr. İlker Etikan, Specialist Doctor Selin Özcem, Research Assistant Emrah Güler examined the relationship between ESBL release in Enterobacteria and Multiple Resistance to Beta-lactam Antibiotics and received the 2nd Poster Award at the EKMUD International Congress in Turkey.

Near East University Experimental Health Sciences Research Centre (DESAM) and Prof. Dr. Seda Vatanserver, Assoc Prof Dr. Eda Becer and Assoc Prof. Dr. Emil Mamadov from Manisa Celal Bayar University joint work on ‘Differentiation potentials of the foreskin stem cells to neurogenic series cells’ received First Prize on Presentation at the Neurodegeneration/ Neurogeneration Workshop.

Named as Günselorum in Literature…
As a result of the fieldwork of Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel and Assoc. Prof Dr. Özge Özden Fuller in Beşparmak Mountains a new spider species was discovered, unique to Cyprus, and was added to the literature under the name ‘günselorum’.
