Hüsnü Can Başer, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at Near East University’s Faculty of Pharmacy, shares the unseen aspects of the scientific publication process with new generations in his new book, titled “Stories Behind Research Results.” Prof. Dr. Başer, whose name is given to five different plant species in Turkey’s flora and who holds a special place in the scientific world, explores the unseen challenges of scientific production, patience, inspiration, coincidences, and passion in his book. The book’s cover illustration was created by Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Ergün, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Near East University and Director of the GÜNSEL Art Museum.

Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer’s impact on the scientific world is not limited to his academic studies. His name lives on in nature as well. A new anise species discovered in Konya, belonging to the Apiaceae family, has entered the scientific literature as “Pimpinella husnucan-baseri” (Can Anise). This meaningful naming was announced to the public on May 22nd, World Biodiversity Day. Thus, Prof. Dr. Başer became immortalized in the field of botany, becoming one of the rare scientists whose name has been given to five different plant species in the Turkish flora. Previously named species include “Başer Lohusaotu (Aristolochia baseri), “Hüsnü Can Başer Thyme (Origanum husnucan-baseri), “Başer Cornflower (Centaurea baseri),” and “Başer Rock Thyme (Thymus baseri),” which grows in rocky areas.

Prof. Dr. Başer is known internationally for his studies in pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, botany, and ethnopharmacology. Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer continues to share his knowledge with students at the Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy. Prof. Dr. Başer, who won the ABC James A. Duke Excellence Award in 2016 for his work titled “Handbook of Essential Oils,” has also received prestigious awards throughout his career, including the TÜBİTAK Science Award, the IFEAT Distinguished Service Medal, and the Turkish Pharmacists’ Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Prof. Dr. Başer has published more than 1,000 articles, 61 books, and 142 congress proceedings, and has also advised 19 master’s and 10 doctoral dissertations.
