Near East University Faculty of Engineering Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte received the best researcher award at the “International Infectious Diseases Research Awards 2022” with his artificial intelligence-based algorithm study that determines the level of uptake of COVID-19 in the body through three-dimensional tomography images!

Receiving the best researcher award in the “International Communicable Diseases Research Awards 2022” given by Pencis International Journal, which stands out with its international peer-reviewed journals published especially in the fields of medicine and engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte’s “Deep learning for diagnosis of COVID-19 using 3D CT scans” was also published in the highly effective journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.

Although the most common methods used for the diagnosis of COVID-19 today are PCR and antigen kits, the definitive diagnosis of the disease in the advanced stage is made through the patient’s lung tomography. Although three-dimensional tomographs vary according to the device that takes the tomography, they are formed by the combination of hundreds of frames. Therefore, it takes a long time to come to a conclusion by analyzing each frame individually, by the human eye, for each patient. In addition, when human interpretation is involved, the possible margin of error increases.

The artificial intelligence-based algorithm developed by Near East University Faculty of Engineering Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte, on the other hand, reveals the effects of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, on the body in a much shorter time with high accuracy.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte: “It is a great honor for my study to receive international attention and to receive the best researcher award at the International Communicable Diseases Research Awards 2022.”
Near East University Faculty of Engineering Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte emphasized that artificial intelligence-based applications continue to develop in the field of health, as in many other fields. Drawing attention to his study that enables the definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 and the determination of which parts of the body the disease is involved in, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte said, “Artificial intelligence supported applications and the development of innovative technologies are among the most important priorities of Near East University. It is a great honor for my study to receive international attention and to receive the best researcher award at the International Communicable Diseases Research Awards 2022.”
