Near East University is organising a basketball tournament titled as Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Cup; bringing together esteemed basketball teams of Euroleague and Eurocup such as Galatasaray, Hatay BŞB, CB Avenida, ZWZ USK Prague and Castors Braine...

Near East University is bringing together esteemed women’s basketball teams together in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, including teams from Basketball Super League of Turkey and Europe, as preparation to the season. In this regard, the women’s basketball team of Near East University is currently ready to host the “International Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Cup”.

Near East University Sports Club made a statement on the matter and expressed that this year, the “International Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Cup” was being hosted for the second time and that it will be taking place on 14-17 September, 2017 at Near East University RA 25 Sports Hall.

Prior to the season, athletes and their teams are said to see this tournament as an opportunity to seriously test themselves and a total of 6 teams from Turkey and Europe are to compete against each other.

Mini Euroleague…5 Euroleague and 1 Eurcup Basketball Team is participating...

As stated above, this year the 2nd International Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Cup will be held and for the first time, 3 teams from Europe are participating in this event. Furthermore, due to this event, many world-renowned athletes will thus be coming to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Therefore, the women’s basketball team of Near East |University will be playing against Galatasaray, Hatay BŞB teams alongside CB Avenida from Spain and ZWZ USK from Czechia , Prague and Castors Braine from Belgium.

The basketball matches will be played at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus...

The tournament matches to be played by basketball teams from Spain, Belgium, Czech will be played at the Near East University RA-25 Sports Hall and the matches will be open to public to watch free of charge.

Chief Coach of the Women’s Basketball Team of Near East University, Zafer Kalaycıoğlu, made a statement regarding the tournament and emphasised that in terms of motivation and preparation, the “International Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Cup” was an important organisation prior to Euroleague and the Basketball League of Turkey.

Assoc. Prof Dr. İrfan Günsel: “As an international organisation, the Dr. Suat Günsel Cup will bring world-star athletes and basketball lovers in Northern Cyprus together!”

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan Günsel stated that the popularity of basketball was increasing around the world and that they were very proud to host the International Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Cup. Furthermore, he asserted that as an international organisation, it was going to bring world-star basketball athletes with basketball lovers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Assoc. Prof Dr. Günsel stated that it was a significant issue to remove the embargoes from the path of the youth and promote opportunities for youth to devote time to sports. In this regard, he stressed that the Near East University would be continuing to work against embargoes so as to enable international teams to play matches at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Furthermore, he stated that as a team from northern Cyprus, the Women’s Basketball Team of Near East University made a mark in history by winning the European Cup. Additionally, he expressed that he was very proud since the Women’s Basketball Team of Near East University had made many achievements through the past 3 years and had won 3 cups. He said that with the 2nd International Dr. Suat Günsel Basketball Tournament, they were bringing assertive teams to northern Cyprus. He re-emphasised that they were very proud and honoured about this and that they will be continuing to work hard to remove embargoes in many fields by making international connections.
