Architects of the future came together at the “Understanding Mimar Sinan” event

Architects of the future came together at the “Understanding Mimar Sinan” event held by Near East University Faculty of Architecture and closely examined the mastery, innovation and contributions of Mimar Sinan, one of the greatest geniuses of Turkish history with his hundreds of works, to the cultural heritage.

At the “Understanding Mimar Sinan” event held by the Near East University Faculty of Architecture, architecture students and academics of the field discussed the legacy of Mimar Sinan and his importance in the field of architecture, by discussing the traces left by the great master. The event, held at the Near East University Grand Library Hall, attracted intense participation.

The opening speech of the event was delivered by Near East University Faculty of Architecture Dean Prof. Dr. Zihni Turkan and Architectural Restoration Department Head Assist. Prof. Dr. Havva Arslangazi Uzunahmet.

In the first part of the all-day event, Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture Restoration Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay participated online and made a presentation about Mimar Sinan’s works and their current restorations, and then answered the questions of the students.

In the afternoon part of the event, Architect Burhan Atun presented his 50 years in the profession and his architectural works from his school years to the present with visuals and gave information to the students about the life of an architect. Atun explained in detail the hundreds of designs and applications he has implemented throughout his 50-year career and gave important information about the place of architecture in professional life.

At the end of the event, Certificates of appreciation were presented by Prof. Dr. Zihni Turkan to Architect Burhan Atun and the members of the organization committee of the event.


Prof. Dr. Zihni Turkan: “Inspired by the works of Mimar Sinan, we will continue to work to build new structures suitable for our age and to protect the cultural heritage.

Stating that they aim to transfer the legacy of Mimar Sinan to future generations through the events they organize, Near East University Faculty of Architecture Dean Prof. Dr. Zihni Turkan said, “Architect Sinan has a unique place not only in the Turkish world but also in the world architectural history. With his works, he demonstrated the power of not only architecture but also art and cultural accumulation. With this event, we wanted to remind our students of the value of Mimar Sinan and enable them to learn from his inspiring works.”
