A 39-year-old male patient’s very high-pitched voice was deepened with a “Larynx” surgery performed while he was awake at Near East University Hospital!

A 39-year-old male patient who was unhappy because his voice was very high-pitched had his voice deepened with a “Larynx” surgery at Near East University Hospital. The surgery, which was performed for the first time in Cyprus, was performed by Near East University Hospital Ear Nose Throat Head and Neck Surgery Department Head Prof. Dr. Ferhat Erişir and his team. During the surgery, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, the tension of the vocal cords was adjusted to obtain the patient’s desired voice tone. The patient, who remained awake throughout the surgery, achieved the desired voice tone after the successful and problem-free surgery.

The “Larynx” surgery performed under local anesthesia allows the patient to instantly hear the changes in his voice during the surgery. In this way, the patient and physician can decide on the most appropriate voice tone together. After the voice thickening surgery, unlike other voice changing operations, the patient does not need to rest their voice, and they start speaking immediately and are discharged the same day.

Prof. Dr. Ferhat Erişir: “Although such operations are performed in accordance with personal wishes, the process should always be managed with expert opinion.”

Prof. Dr. Ferhat Erişir, Head of the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgery at Near East University Hospital, who performed the operation, said, “Although such operations are performed in accordance with personal wishes, it is always important to consult an ear, nose and throat specialist and consider the risks.”

Reminding that the suitability of the voice to age, gender and physical conditions can be important in terms of social and personal perception, Prof. Dr. Erişir said that for this reason, voice aesthetic applications performed with surgical or non-surgical methods to change the tone of the voice make people’s lives easier.

Stating that the patient’s vocal cords were examined and a voice analysis was performed before the voice aesthetic operation performed by specialist physicians, Prof. Dr. Erişir stated that they imaged the person’s vocal cords with the ‘Laryngostroboscopy’ method. “If the voice is to be thinned or thickened, a voice record is taken and the appropriate frequency is determined for the person. After the necessary information is given to the patient about vocal hygiene and voice use, they are asked to stop smoking, alcohol and carbonated drinks two weeks before the operation.” said Prof. Dr. Erişir, and stated that the surgery is performed with a small incision technique made in the neck by selecting the most appropriate method for the patient.

Prof. Dr. Erişir said, “We reach the vocal cords and ensure that their tension, length and mass are regulated.” Stating that the incision scar in operations performed in the neck usually disappears within months, Prof. Dr. Ferhat Erişir said, “The patient should not neglect doctor check-ups during this process, should avoid behaviors such as shouting that will disturb the vocal cords and should stay away from activities that will strain the body.”

Also touching on the importance of the post-operative period, Prof. Dr. Ferhat Erişir stated, “It is normal to experience slight changes, hoarseness or temporary losses in the voice during the healing process. In the first 2-3 months after voice aesthetic operations, a tone close to the targeted voice tone is achieved, but it may take 6 to 12 months for the desired voice tone to fully emerge.”
