Vice Dean of Girne University Faculty of Law and Near East University Faculty of Law lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan was awarded the “Social Sciences Research Award” among the Sedat Simavi Awards given by the Journalists Association of Turkey for her book titled “Unfair Provocation: A Man’s Right”.

This prestigious award, which has been given since 1977 to encourage creative studies in areas such as art, culture, science and sports, is presented to names that have achieved great success every year.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan, with her award-winning book titled “Unfair Provocation: A Man’s Right” focused on femicide cases in Turkey and deeply examined how the concept of “unjust provocation” affects judicial processes. Prepared using the court ethnography method, the book reveals gender inequalities in the legal system. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan’s award-winning book is considered an important source for contributing to gender justice.


Who is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan?

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1997. Having completed her master’s and doctorate degrees in the Department of Philosophy and Sociology of Law, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan wrote her doctoral thesis on the social environment and criminal capacity of children involved in crime and was deemed worthy of the “Young Scientist Award” by the Social Sciences Association of Turkey. Having conducted research and given lectures at various universities in Germany, Italy and Turkey, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atılgan wrote a book titled “Justice is Being Slightly Missed” together with Mithat Sancar, and this book is considered one of the most comprehensive studies on the sociology of justice in Turkey.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan, who provides consultancy to the Ministry of Justice and other public institutions in strategy-determining processes, has also worked on women’s and children’s rights projects in international organizations such as the UN, UNICEF and the World Bank. Also active in legal clinics and services for victims of violence, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan worked in the field of combating sexual violence at Ankara University between 2010 and 2017. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eylem Ümit Atılgan, who has been a faculty member at the Near East University and the University of Kyrenia since 2017, continues to teach courses such as “Sociology of Law” and “Gender Equality and Discrimination Law”.
