Academic Members and Students of Near East University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences got together with Academic Member of Johan Skytte Political Sciences Institute of University of Tartu Estonia Prof. Dr. Eiki Berg.

According the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the seminar was on a new approach to conflict management and conflict resolution; what kind of solutions are created through cross-border interaction and cooperation-and how perception differences of conflict can be different from each party were discussed.

Functional dimensions of borders in areas of conflict...
During the seminar, Prof. Dr. Berg provided examples regarding China-Taiwan; South Cyprus- North Cyprus; and Moldova-Transnistria to explain how functional and discursive dimensions could different in different regions of conflict. Prof. Dr. Berg added that borders served as the creators of communal relations of the parties in regions of conflict. Furthermore, the communal relations and cross-border cooperation could be organised and institutionalized.

Prof. Dr. Berg emphasised how border check points in Cyprus impacted on the two communities in Cyprus...
He stressed how the border check points in Cyprus were influencing the Turkish and Greek Cypriots on the island but also pointed out that compared to the other examples mentioned above this interaction was still quite limited in nature. Prof. Dr. Berg emphasised that the main reason for this was based on having recognition, political concerns, and the feeling of trust among the two communities. He asserted that the border check points caused a duality; while check points caused an interaction between two communities they also made a greater disintegration.

Students are being encouraged to think analytically...
Head of Department of International Relations Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sait Akşit it was a significant opportunity to host internationally recognised academicians to share knowledge and information on Near East University campus as they created the chance to develop multiple perspectives to matters and therefore students are encouraged to gain analytical thinking skills.
