The life of Near East University student Derin Öksüz inspires with the success story she built by defying the odds. Derin Öksüz, who has had obstacles in walking, writing and doing his daily work due to muscle weakness since his childhood, has managed to become a professional radio employee and a master’s student today by studying tirelessly.
The documentary, which covers Derin Öksüz’s life story by Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (BRTK), has become one of the most special productions of 2024. 24-year-old Derin Öksüz summarized his story with these words; “They had said he would not be able to walk, I walked. They said he would not be able to read, now I’m carrying out a master’s degree.”, and continues to inspire many people with her success and determination.
I did it!
Derin Öksüz, who turned the difficult process that started with a diagnosis of muscle weakness and risk of epilepsy at the age of four into a success story thanks to the belief and support of his family, stated that he struggled for years to develop his motor skills and said, “I couldn’t tie my shoes, I couldn’t tie my hair. However, I managed to do all of these. Because I never gave up trying.”
Öksüz, who stated that he overcame the limitations imposed by the doctors thanks to his family’s determination, emphasized his family’s support with the following words; “Doctors said ‘he would not be able to talk, he would not be able to walk.’ But my family didn’t give up. I walked, I talked and I became one of the children who learned to read the earliest in the class.”
A turning point in his education: Near East University
After completing high school at Near East College, Derin Öksüz, who continued her education at Near East University, describes this decision as a turning point in his life. Öksüz, who chose the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema at Near East University’s Faculty of Communication thanks to his strong communication with people and interest in art, developed himself here by focusing on practical projects along with theoretical knowledge.
“My faculty and professors always supported me. I did not feel excluded by either my friends or my professors,” said Derin, adding that the experiences he gained during his university years strengthened him. Expressing that he managed to overcome the peer bullying he experienced during his middle school years, he said, “I made peace with myself and focused on my education. Thanks to this, my university years were very good.”

Derin Öksüz also expressed his family’s support in his education with great gratitude. Emphasizing the support of his uncle Hasan Öksüz, who works in the media sector, Derin says, “My mother’s love and guidance have always been my guide.” Derin Öksüz, who gained experience at Radyo Vatan after graduating from Near East University and currently works at Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (BRTK), aims to become a program producer and director in the future. “I want to reach more people with my story and give hope to individuals who are going through the same things. Sharing his goals for the future by saying “My biggest dream is to improve myself in every way, to be a well-equipped individual and a good communicator.” Derin Öksüz continues to inspire everyone with his determination.
