Tests for single gene diseases, rare or unknown diseases that are difficult to diagnose, complex origin disorders and cancer diagnosis and treatment can now be performed in the TRNC with the third generation DNA sequence analyses that have started to be performed at the Near East University Hospital Medical Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory.

The Near East University Hospital Medical Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory has made a first in the TRNC; it has started to diagnose with “Third Generation DNA Sequence Analysis” in molecular genetic analyses. Third Generation DNA Sequence Analysis diagnoses that were previously sent abroad can now be performed in the Near East University Hospital Medical Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory within a few days and more economically. In particular, tests for single gene diseases, rare or unknown diseases that are difficult to diagnose, complex origin disorders and cancer diagnosis and treatment can now be performed in the TRNC, which will contribute to the prevention of many genetic diseases.

The “4Bases CE-IVD approved Next Generation Sequence Analysis (NGS)” diagnostic kit manufacturer based in Switzerland and a world-renowned technology company offering innovative DNA sequence analysis solutions and “Oxford Nanopore Technologies” based in the United Kingdom have started to be performed at the Near East University Hospital Medical Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory. Following the completion of the system installation at the Near East University Hospital, an information meeting was also held for healthcare professionals.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören, Head of the Near East University Hospital Medical Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory, said, “Possible errors in the detection of genetic changes resulting from short DNA sequence readings in classical Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) systems have been eliminated with the detailed method of Third Generation DNA Sequence Analysis,” and added, “The system, which can perform genetic analysis processes much faster and more efficiently, also significantly improves the accuracy and quality of test results.”

It has reduced the cost by three times and made genetic analyses much easier and faster!

Third generation sequencing, since the international research project “Human Genome Project” that aims to map the entire genetic structure of humans, the development of newer and better DNA sequencing technologies has reduced the cost of sequencing the genetic structure of humans by three times.

This method, especially performed with “Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT)”, offers a great advantage for investigating the causes of genetic diseases, developing personalized treatments and examining genetic diversity.

Third generation sequencing allows scientists to examine genomes at high resolution, and can also solve DNA sequences that are 30 thousand bases long and even millions of bases in size. This makes it possible to reveal the genetic structure of humans more quickly and easily.

Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan: “We will continue to offer the most up-to-date and innovative solutions in Northern Cyprus with international collaborations in the field of health.”

“With the establishment of the Third Generation DNA Sequence Analysis system, we have taken a revolutionary step in the field of genetics and genomic science,” said Near East University Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan, and added, “We are happy to be able to provide faster results to our patients by providing such services in the TRNC.” Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan stated that with this investment, which allows effective solutions to be provided in a short time in the diagnosis and detection of genetic diseases, they have also increased the accuracy and reliability of test results to the highest level. Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan also stated that they will continue to provide the most up-to-date and innovative solutions in Northern Cyprus through international collaborations.
