A Bridge of Rumi from Cyprus to Azerbaijan!

The “9th International Scientific Rumi Congress” organized by the Near East University Rumi Research Center was held in Baku this year, hosted by Azerbaijan’s Khazar University.

The “International Scientific Rumi Congress”, which has been a tradition for 9 years by the Near East University Rumi Research Center, was held in Azerbaijan this year, hosted by the Mevlana Literary-Philosophical Research Institute of Azerbaijan’s Khazar University. Discussions were held on the thoughts of Mevlana, who is known for his love of humanity and universal understanding of tolerance, at the congress held in Baku. Focusing on Mevlana’s thoughts on the theme of ‘humanity and peace’, the congress also brought together researchers from different cultures and geographies.

The “9th International Scientific Rumi Congress” held in Baku last year within the scope of the cooperation protocol signed between Near East University and Khazar University, addressed the thoughts of Mevlana and Mevlevi within the framework of Sufism, wisdom and literature.

Participants from 18 countries took part!

Many countries were represented in the congress, which was attended by academics, researchers and thinkers from 18 countries, including Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the USA, Brazil, India and Pakistan. 42 participants presented face-to-face and 32 participants presented papers online.

In the closing session of the congress, which saw intense participation, it was decided that the “10th International Scientific Rumi Congress” would be hosted by Near East University in 2025. It was also announced that the papers presented at the congress would be published in the ‘Scopus-indexed Literature and Sufism journal’. The statement stated that detailed information about the congress and registration procedures could be accessed via the official website of the Near East University Rumi Studies Center.


Prof. Dr. Ghadir Golkarian: “We were proud that our flag flew throughout the congress!”

Near East University Rumi Studies Center President Prof. Dr. Ghadir Golkarian stated that the “International Scientific Rumi Congress” is traditionally organized every year during the “Şeb-i Arus” period. Prof. Dr. Golkarian said, “The congress, where we discussed the intellectual heritage of Rumi, brought together international scientists in the fields of literature, Sufism and wisdom and provided a great opportunity to create common visions. We were proud that Azerbaijan acted together with us in this event and allowed our flag to fly throughout the congress.” He stated that they will continue such collaborations as the Rumi Research Center.

Emphasizing that the Near East University is a respected institution in the Turkic world, Prof. Dr. Golkarian said, “We are establishing strong connections with scientists from all over the world for the future and preparing the ground for the formation of new visions for collaborations with different universities. In this respect, the congress is an important step for scientific progress and strengthening international collaborations.”
