6th World Congress on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (WOCMAP 2019) was held in Bafra

Since 1993, International Council for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (ICMAP) World Congress on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants is held every five years on a different continent. This year, the 6th World Congress on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (WOCMAP 2019) was held in Bafra, Famagusta, which academic member of Near East University Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Başer chaired.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the congress was held at Kaya Artemis Hotel in Bafra to which 250 scholars from 37 different countries, 13 guests, and a total of 83 verbal and 113 poster presentations were made. Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy of Near East University Prof. Dr. İhsan Çalış and Head of Health Sciences Institute Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer made call presentations. It was stated that many scholars from Near East University, Eastern Mediterranean University and International Cyprus University made numerous verbal and poster presentations.

In addition to the above, it was expressed that at the congress, interesting presentations and discussions were held on medicinal and aromatic plants, herbal medicines, herbal essences, natural fragrance and taste substances, food supplements, phytotherapy, aromatherapy, alternative treatments commercial, managerial and scientific developments in natural medicine. Previously, the congress was held in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. The 7th congress is to be held in 2024 in Northern America.

Making the opening speech of the congress, Vice Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ stated that it was a pleasure to hold such an important congress on our island and wished for the success of the congress.

On the other hand, Chair of the Congress and Academic Member of the Near East University Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer expressed how participants of the congress stated that they were pleased the congress was being held on the north of the island. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Başer added that people found the opportunity to get to know the touristic and cultural heritage of Northern Cyprus during the visits made to Nicosia and Kyrenia.

Global Frankincense Alliance is to be established
Prof. Dr. Başer added that special sessions held on Frankincense and Myrrh attracted great interest of the participants and announced that it was decided to establish a Global Frankincense Alliance; pointing out that this decision is to be included in the final declaration of the congress.

International Symposium on Essential Oils is to be held at Near East University in 2020
Providing further details, Prof. Dr. Başer expressed that congress abstracts could be found at www.wocmap2019.org . Also, he announced that the International Symposium on Essential Oils (ISEO 2020), which was introduced at the congress, will be held at the Near East University on September 6-9, 2020.
