The Intercultural Basketball Tournament held at Near East University ends: The tournament, held in memory of Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, was won by the TRNC team.
The “Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan International Basketball Cup”, held for the first time this year at Near East University, brought together students from various geographical regions on the same court, creating an unforgettable sporting spectacle on campus. The tournament, held in memory of Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, who served as rector of Near East University for 23 years and made significant contributions to higher education in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, was won by the TRNC team.
Organized by the Near East University Health, Culture and Sports Department and held at the RA25 Indoor Sports Hall, the tournament combined the excitement of competition with the power of cultural solidarity.
Students from 20 different countries represented their nations on the court, showcasing the university’s multicultural structure. Young athletes from Morocco, Palestine, Ghana, Gambia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Northern Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Libya, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Sudan, Turkey, Uganda, Jordan, Yemen, and Zimbabwe provided thrilling moments for the spectators with their gentlemanly competition. The enthusiastic atmosphere in the stands added color to the final of the tournament.
Northern Cyprus Champions in a Breathtaking Tournament!
In the semi-final matches of the tournament, Northern Cyprus defeated Sudan 48-29 to secure their place in the final, while Turkey beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 37-35 to become the other finalist. In the third-place match, the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Sudan 22-18 to finish the tournament in third place.
In the final match, Northern Cyprus challenged Turkey. Northern Cyprus, showing an impressive performance, won the match 39-15 to become the tournament champion, while Turkey ranked in the second place. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, having lifted the championship cup, celebrated its victory by playing Dillirga national dance with the Turkish team.
