Representing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at the EuroCup Women’s Basketball, women’s basketball team of Near East University has won the right to be within the FIBA Women’s European Cup although it was defeated by Istanbul University at the playoff with a score of 68-57.
According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Women’s Basketball Team of Near East University played a playoff match with Istanbul University at its own sports hall and was defeated with a score of 68-57. Through a 18 points difference average, the Near East University has is now eligible to be a part of the groups to play for the EuroCup.
NEU will be competing in EuroCup Group D…
It was revealed that Near East University Women’s Basketball is the first Turkish team from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to compete in a League in Europe. Thus, NEU will be competing in EuroCup Group D and will be paling against Olympiacos Piraeus from Greece; Good Angels Kosice from Slovakia and Aluinvent Miskolc from Hungary.

Making a statement after the match, Near East University Women’s Basketball Team Coach Zafer Kalaycıoğlu expressed that Near East University had made a great investment in the field of basketball and that it was very pleasing to see the team to play games in a league in Europe. He added that although they had lost their last match, it was now a game in the past and that they were looking ahead. Moreover, he stressed that their first goal was to prepare in the best possible way to their next match to be played with Fenerbahçe in the first week of the league.
