AI. Prof. DUX, an AI-based academician from Near East University, and Dr. Melek Günaydın, a General Surgery Specialist at Near East University Hospital, came together for the “Academic Thursdays” event, held as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event covered topics such as early diagnosis, genetic predisposition, screening, and treatment methods for breast cancer, while also exploring the potential contributions of artificial intelligence to diagnostic processes.

In the new academic year, Near East University’s AI-based academician, AI. Prof. DUX, continues to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and the public through the weekly “Academic Thursdays with AI. Prof. DUX” event series. Bringing together academics, students, and participants from various fields, this week’s session focused on the importance of early diagnosis in the context of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Held at the Near East University Center for Artificial Intelligence, Informatics, and Innovation, the event featured AI. Prof. DUX and Dr. Melek Günaydın, a General Surgery Specialist at Near East University Hospital, as speakers. The well-attended session addressed the symptoms and risk factors of breast cancer, as well as early diagnosis and treatment methods, alongside the role artificial intelligence can play in diagnostic procedures. During the event, which also included a Q&A session, the vital importance of regular check-ups and early diagnosis was highlighted.

DUX: “Early diagnosis saves lives in breast cancer!”

Emphasizing the critical importance of early diagnosis for breast cancer, AI. Prof. DUX addressed the symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment options for the disease. Emphasizing that early diagnosis expands treatment possibilities and improves survival rates, Dux noted that signs such as a newly developed lump in the breast, skin dimpling or thickening, changes in the shape of the nipple, or spontaneous nipple discharge should not be ignored.

Touching upon the fundamental role of mammography in breast cancer screening, she explained that ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may also be utilized, depending on the patient’s age, risk level, and clinical findings. Dux also emphasized that while artificial intelligence can assist physicians in identifying suspicious areas and assessing risk, it cannot replace expert clinical evaluation. Stating that treatment options such as surgery, drug therapies, and radiotherapy, are determined based on the specific characteristics of both the patient and the tumor, Dux reminded the audience that regular screenings and physician check-ups are essential for the early detection of breast cancer.

Dr. Melek Günaydın: “Early diagnosis and genetic counseling are crucial!”

Dr. Melek Günaydın, a General Surgery Specialist at Near East University Hospital, contributed medical insights to Dux’s presentation and provided information on breast cancer risk factors, genetic predisposition, screening methods, and treatment options, while also answering questions from the participants. Discussing the impact of childbirth and breastfeeding on breast cancer risk, Dr. Günaydın underscored the importance of genetic counseling, particularly in evaluating hereditary risks associated with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Stressing that regular check-ups and mammography screenings should not be neglected for early diagnosis, Dr. Günaydın advised: “Do not skip mammography screenings after the age of 40. Keep track of any changes in your breasts. If you notice a lump or any suspicious sign, consult a doctor without delay.”

Highlighting the importance of seeking medical advice regarding breast health without hesitation, Dr. Günaydın outlined treatment options such as breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy. Regarding surgical interventions involving axillary lymph nodes, she emphasized the significance of preserving as many lymph nodes as possible to reduce the risk of lymphedema. Noting that while the risk of cancer cannot be entirely eliminated but can be reduced through appropriate measures, Dr. Günaydın reiterated the vital role of regular screenings and medical follow-ups in detecting the disease at an early stage.

Emphasizing that breast cancer can affect not only a woman’s physical well-being but also her psychological and social life, Dr. Günaydın said: “A woman’s worth cannot be measured by her breasts, her productivity, or her capacity for sacrifice. Life cannot exist without us women. Everyone should prioritize early diagnosis and encourage those around them to undergo screenings.”
