Shanghai Ranking Announces: Near East University is the Best Turkish University in Mathematics and Physics!

Near East University ranked first among universities in Turkey and Cyprus in the fields of Mathematics and Physics according to the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) results announced by Shanghai Ranking.

Already ranked among the world’s top 500 universities, Near East University achieved significant success in the fields of “Mathematics” and “Physics” in the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) released by Shanghai Ranking. Placing in the 201–300 band for Mathematics and the 301–400 band for Physics globally, Near East University secured the top spot among universities in both Turkey and Cyprus in these two disciplines.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, published annually by Shanghai Ranking, highlights the scientific and research performance of universities in specific academic fields. Near East University has once again demonstrated its academic strength in basic sciences on an international scale with its rankings in “Mathematics” and “Physics”.

Ranked in the global top 300 for Mathematics!

Having previously ranked in the 401–500 band globally for Mathematics, Near East University made a significant rise in the 2026 GRAS results, moving up to the 201–300 band. In the field of Physics, it ranked in the 301–400 band. Unlike general university rankings, Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects focuses on scientific performance within specific academic disciplines. The evaluation considers indicators such as research output, the quality and impact of research, the qualifications of academic staff, and international research collaborations.

Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ noted the significance of the results announced by Shanghai Ranking in showcasing the body of scientific knowledge universities have built, saying, “Evaluating a university’s research performance solely based on publication counts is insufficient. The quality and impact of the knowledge produced, the research networks established with the international scientific community, and the creation of a sustainable culture of academic output are also of great importance. Field-based rankings make this capacity much more visible at the disciplinary level.”

Emphasizing that rising from the 401–500 band to the 201–300 band in Mathematics signifies remarkable academic progress, Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ said, “Our advancement of two hundred steps in the Mathematics rankings and the maintenance of our position in the 301–400 band in Physics reflect the academic ecosystem created by the productivity of our research groups, our high-quality scientific publications, and our international research collaborations. Moving forward, we aim to sustain this momentum by further strengthening interdisciplinary research, high-impact scientific studies, and international partnerships within the basic sciences.”
