A Major Gathering for Human Rights at Near East University!

The “Human Rights Symposium”, to be hosted by Near East University, will take place at the Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan Republic Hall of the Grand Library with the participation of President Tufan Erhürman. The all-day symposium will address human rights from a multifaceted perspective, focusing on law, media, and the digital age.

Near East University, ranked among the top 500 universities in the world, is preparing to host current and multifaceted discussions on human rights. Organized in collaboration with the Near East University Faculty of Law and the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, the “Human Rights Symposium” will bring together experts in the field and offer rich content, culminating in an academic gathering on Tuesday, March 31st at 09:00.

The symposium, which will bring together academia, the legal world, and the public, will include President Tufan Erhürman, Ombudsman İlkan Varol, and the President of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, lawyer Hasan Esendağlı. This symposium will provide an important perspective on the ongoing discussions in the field of human rights in Cyprus.

The all-day symposium will be held at the Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan Republic Hall of Near East University. The program, consisting of three separate sessions, will address current and critical topics such as the current state of human rights in the TRNC, the principle of the rule of law, institutional limits in small states, media ethics, combating disinformation, the impact of algorithms on freedom of thought, and the rights of people with disabilities, presented by expert academics and lawyers.

A Multifaceted Perspective on the Rule of Law and Human Rights!

The first session will be chaired by lawyer Aslı Murat, Head of the Human Rights Committee of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association. Speakers in this session will include lawyer Esra Lekesiz Karabacak on “The Situation of Foreigners in the Context of Human Rights in the TRNC”, lawyer Melis Türkkal on “Media, Ethics and Human Rights in the TRNC: The Role of the Media Ethics Board”, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Görkem Göktuna from Near East University, who will address the topics of “TMK: “Once Upon a Time, There Was an Effective Legal Way.”

The second session will be chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nabi Berkut from Near East University. In this session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bezar Eylem Ekinci from Eastern Mediterranean University will make a presentation on “Effective Protection of Human Rights in a State of Law”; Assist. Prof. Dr. Erdem Ertürk from Cyprus International University will speak on “Law-State-Justice”, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Sıla Tatlıdil Ongun from Near East University will make a presentation on “Institutional Limits of the Rule of Law Principle in Small-Scale States: TRNC Analysis.”

The final session will be chaired by Dr. Fikrican Kayıkçı from Near East University. In this session, lawyer Meral Birinci Sonan will make a presentation on “Recognized Rights in Unrecognized States: The Validity of Human Rights in the Case of the TRNC”, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuğberk Kaya from the TRNC Prime Ministry Digital Transformation and Electronics Association will speak on “Freedom of Thought in the Shadow of Algorithms”; Assist. Prof. Dr. Huri Yontucu from Eastern Mediterranean University will discuss “The Right to Access Accurate Information and the Fight Against Disinformation”, and lawyer Kübra Şanverdi will address “Disability Rights within the Scope of Human Rights and the Competent and Effective Use of Technology in this Context”.
