Mathematics Moves from Textbook Pages to Real Life!

An exhibition organized by students from the Near East University Faculty of Education at Alsancak Primary School provided the primary school students with a fun learning experience by connecting mathematics to daily life.
Near East University, ranked among the top 500 universities in the world, continues to introduce students to scientific thinking at an early age with its innovative educational approach and community-focused studies. In this context, the “Real Life and Mathematics” themed exhibition, carried out by students from the Primary School Teaching and Primary School Mathematics Teaching Departments of the Near East University Faculty of Education at Alsancak Primary School, provided the primary school students with the opportunity to discover mathematics through fun. The exhibition, implemented within the scope of the “Mathematical Modeling” course, aimed to introduce mathematics in a concrete and fun way by connecting it to daily life through materials prepared by prospective teachers.

In the exhibition, which aimed to connect mathematics with students’ real-life experiences, primary school students worked interactively with mathematical modeling problems. In this way, students realized that mathematics is not just a subject found in textbooks. Students discovered that mathematics is a thinking and problem-solving tool encountered in every aspect of life, experiencing an educational and enjoyable learning experience that enhanced their mathematical thinking skills.

Prospective teachers are being equipped with innovative methods and gaining experience!
Prof. Dr. Murat Tezer, a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics Education at Near East University, who gave the opening speech of the exhibition, emphasized that the materials in the exhibition would positively influence students’ attitudes towards mathematics. Prof. Dr. Tezer said, “Such studies, linked to real life, will strengthen students’ connection with mathematics and will greatly contribute to their learning processes.” Prof. Dr. Murat Tezer thanked the prospective teachers and the school administration for their efforts in preparing the exhibition. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Köprülü, a faculty member of the Department of Primary Education and Deputy Head of the Basic Education Department at Atatürk Faculty of Education, drew attention to the importance of equipping prospective teachers with innovative methods. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Köprülü said, “This exhibition is a concrete reflection of our goal to develop creative solutions in education for our prospective teacher. I hereby thank everyone who contributed.”

Positive attitudes towards the lesson are being developed, and motivation is increasing!
Alsancak Primary School Principal Sait Coşaner stated that the event, with its approach of relating mathematics to daily life, increased students’ learning motivation. Emphasizing that such practices play an important role in developing positive attitudes towards the lesson, Coşaner stated that this supports lasting learning. Noting that school and university collaboration strengthens the quality of education, Coşaner said, “We hope that such initiatives will continue. We thank the university administration, academics, and prospective teachers who contributed to the preparation of the exhibition.”
