Near East University Holds Environmental and Nature Conservation Seminar in France

Researchers from Near East University, one of the world’s top 500 universities, shared their findings with the scientific community at seminars and meetings held in France on rural landscapes, nature conservation, and human impacts on the environment in the Mediterranean basin.

Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of Near East University, and Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel, Vice Dean, gave a seminar in France as part of a collaborative studies with the University of Rouen, France. Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, from the Department of Geography at Rouen University, gave a presentation titled “Rural landscapes, nature conservation, and culture in the Mediterranean Basin.” Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel also gave a presentation titled “Not just the planet is losing.”

Prof. Dr. Özden and Prof. Dr. Gücel, who are holding meetings to strengthen the collaboration between the two universities and develop new joint projects, held a meeting with experts from various departments at Rouen University prior to the seminar. The meeting included: Near East University and Rouen University have decided to develop a joint project on wetlands in Cyprus and the impact of climate change on them.

Rural landscapes, nature conservation, and culture with examples from Cyprus!

Prof. Özge Özden, who presented at the seminar titled “Rural landscapes, nature conservation, and culture in the Mediterranean Basin,” emphasized the existence and importance of natural landscapes in Mediterranean countries. Citing examples from the island of Cyprus, Prof. Özden emphasized the importance of natural and semi-natural areas in rural areas for environmental protection and biodiversity. Prof. Özden provided information on Specially Protected Areas in Northern Cyprus and their conservation status, and in her presentation, she also shared some information about the status of typical Mediterranean habitats in France.

Prof. Dr. Özge Özden also gave a lecture on “The EU Habitat Directive and Biodiversity Measurement Techniques” to master’s students in the Geography Department at Rouen University. During the lecture, French students and third-country master’s students discussed research methods and applications in the field of biodiversity.

Humanity’s impact on the environment and awareness were discussed!

In his presentation titled “It’s not just the planet that’s losing,” Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel highlighted the environmental damage humans are causing globally. Emphasizing the need to further promote nature conservation, environmental protection, and conscious consumerism in cities and rural areas, Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel pointed out the importance of raising this awareness through education and community projects. Prof. Dr. Gücel emphasized the need to integrate biodiversity conservation efforts into society.
