Teeth whitening method “bleaching” should be applied under the supervision of a dentist
It is possible to return the teeth, which are yellowed and stained due to malnutrition or natural reasons, to their former white state by whitening. However, unconscious whitening without dentist control can cause permanent damage to the teeth.

One of the most important things for those who take care of their personal appearance is to have white and clean teeth. However, over time, drugs or structural reasons, especially the foods we consume, can lead to yellowing or staining of the teeth. It is possible to get rid of these stains with the bleaching method. So, how is this process done and what should be considered when doing maintenance afterwards? Assoc. Prof. Özgür Irmak from Near East University Faculty of Dentistry Hospital gives important tips about teeth whitening and care…

Why do teeth change color?
Near East University Faculty of Dentistry Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Irmak says that tobacco use is one of the most important causes of color change in teeth. Stating that the age factor is one of the determining factors in the color changes in the teeth, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Irmak said “The outer enamel layer wears out over time due to brushing and other factors. Under the enamel that is thinned by wear, the more yellowish dentin layer appears in the surface and as a result, the tooth appears more yellow. Stating that some stains can be cleaned by the dentist with the help of a high-speed brush, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irmak states that bleaching treatment should be applied for discolorations that have penetrated into the teeth, caused by antibiotics or due to aging.

What is teeth bleaching?
Tooth bleaching is a very effective way to lighten the natural color of teeth without any abrasion on the tooth surface. Bleaching treatment is based on the principle that as a result of the bleaching agent used on the tooth surface for a certain period of time, it penetrates into the tooth and turns the colored structures in the tooth into a lighter color. This procedure can be performed by the dentist in the clinic or at home under the supervision of a dentist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Irmak says that both applications can be carried out together in advanced cases. With the treatment completed within two to four weeks, only the existing natural teeth can be toned. It does not create any change on prostheses and fillings.

How long do teeth stay whiter after treatment?
Stating that the result of tooth bleaching treatment varies from person to person, Near East University Faculty of Dentistry Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Irmak pointed out that the effects of bleaching can last up to three years. However, he also emphasized that this period may be shortened if the eating habits that cause coloration of the teeth are continued. In some individuals, the teeth may become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. There may be mild irritation of the gums, especially in the home bleaching treatment. Symptoms are usually temporary and disappear spontaneously a few days after the end of treatment.
