Near East University, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School jointly working to detect 1mm size tumour via medical imaging

Near East university Department of Biomedical Engineering, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) jointly working on using a new generation medical imaging device-positron emission mammography- so as to detect the smallest breast cancer tumour .

According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the study is running at the helm of Academic Member of Near East Department of Biomedical Engineering Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin and the project to detect the tiniest breast tumours is being carried out with one of the world renown medical groups “Gordon Centre for Medical Imaging” by using positron emission mammography. Furthermore, it was pointed out that the project was being supported by Near East University Scientific Research Centre Coordination.

It will be possible to detect the tiniest sized tumours…

The above mentioned positron emission mammography is 6 times more sensitive that devices of latest technology in detecting tumours and is being currently only used by Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General hospital and is expected to detect 1mm sized tumours.

Further studies will be carried out on artificial intelligence medical screening applications…

Assist. Prof. Dr. Özşahin explained that her studies jointly done with one of the most renowned imaging groups Gordon Centre for Medical Imaging is currently progressing successfully and added that in the near future, they will be working on artificial intelligence medical screening.

Biomedical Engineering students will be provided the opportunity to study and carry out research…

Assist. Prof. Dr. Özşahin expressed that Near East University Department of Biomedical Engineering postgraduate students will be provided the opportunity to carry out their master’s and doctorate studies and research at Massachusetts General Hospiatla and Harvard Medical School.

She added that they will be continuing to work and make the necessary connections to improve the quality and standard of the Near East University Department of Biomedical Engineering and make stronger bonds with both Massachusetts general Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She emphasised that their 3-month hard work has been supported by the Near East University Scientific Research Project Coordination Directorate.
