Sorrowful day of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atila Türk, one of the most prominent figures of Near East University passed away after a six months hospitalization. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atila Türk was regarded as one of the most prominent and respected figures in his field due to his extraordinary skills in using the language and specializing on the field subjects. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Türk served quite a long time at the Faculty of Communication of Near East University. During his service at the university, he always emphasized that he regarded the Near East University as his home and his students and colleagues as his family. A funeral ceremony was organized by the Rectorate of Near East University with participation of many of his colleagues and students, and following the speeches delivered in memory of him by his colleagues and students, he was buried to Nicosia Cemetery, nearby the campus of Near East University.

Organised by the Near East University Faculty of Communication the “Vocational Workshops” were completed after a certificate ceremony. It was revealed that the workshops were organised by the Department of Radio, TV and Cinema of NEU Faculty of Communication, and that practical information related to the sector were given and experiences were shared at the workshops. According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, seven separate workshops were held throughout April. These workshops were said to be rather fruitful and were related to the fields of TV, radio and cinema. In addition to the above, details were provided regarding the workshops held. These included: Assist. Prof. Dr Mustafa Ufuk Çelik “TV programmes and hosting Workshop”; Dr. Sinem Kasımoğlu“Radio Programmes and Hosting Workshop”; Academic Member Emrah Öztürk ”Lighting and Camera Workshop”; Academic Member Pelin Agocuk “Fiction Workshop”; Academic Member Zeyde Yalıner Örek “Studio Management Workshop”; Academic Member Gazi Yüksel “Basic Photography Workshop”; and Academic Member Mustafa Ersenal “News Cameramen Workshop”. Furthermore, the workshops were expressed to have been completed over two weeks and that the participants of the workshops were awarded with a certificate of participation were given at a certificate ceremony. The coordinator of the workshops was Head of Department of Radio, TV and Cinema, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap, and that a total of 50 students were given certificate of participation, alongside giving certificate of appreciation to the people in charge of the aforementioned workshops which included: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ufuk Çelik; Dr. Sinem Kasımoğlu; Pelin Agocuk; Emrah Öztürk; Zeyde Y. Örek; and Mustafa Ersenal.
Produced as one of the film making projects of the Near East University Faculty of Communications Film Production (Film Making Department), Dr. Dilara gets great admiration at the Cannes Film Festival. Tamer Garip, Director of the Communication Affairs, speaking to the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, said “First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the crew of the film Dr. Dilara, Dr. Suat İ. Günsel, Founding Rector of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, Chairman of Board of Trustees of the Near East University, the Near East Family for their invaluable support in realization of the film of Dr. Dilara. Without their support, the film of Dr. Dilara would not be produced. Announcing the name of the Near East University the second time is an invaluable pride for us. The premiere of the film starring Rushan Ankay (Dr. Dilara Bessano), Cengiz Bozkurt, Ercan Saymen, Buse Kırpala and Pembegül Bayram was held at the Palais H cinema hall.
Near East University takes place in the festival management board of Turkic World Documentary Film Competition
A promotional film was released for the upcoming Turkic World Documentary Film Competition that organized by the Journalists Federation of Turkic World. The Journalists Federation of Turkic World is coming up with Turkic World Documentary Film Festival, a significant event that organized for the first time this year with international framework based on Turkic World. The Turkic World Documentary Film Competition will be held within the scope of the film festival. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, Turkic World Documentary Film Festival and Competition has been organized by the World Federation of Journalists of Turkic World with the support of Presidency for Turks Abroad and Relatives Community, Niğde University, Near East University, Union of Turkic World Municipalities, Ministry of Culture General Directorate of Cinema, Anatolian agency, TIKA, TURKSOY, Yunus Emre Institute, Azerbaijan Documentation Council, Turkic World Journalists Platform, Kazakhstan Turkic Civilizations Foundation and Macedonia Turkic Journalists Union. Near East University takes place in the Festival Management Board Near East University Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel takes active role in the Festival Management on behalf of TRNC. Near East University once more represented at the Lions International Short Film Competition where in recent years Ömer Evre had won the “Best Cinematography Director” and Gokalp Yamen the “Best Director” awards. According to a press statment released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Gökalp Yamen, graduate of NEU Radio and Cinema Department, has managed to become a finalist in the competition with the film called “They Shot Me Out of Dardanalles” which was made a graduation project. The film, supported by the Communication Research Centre under Center of Excellence, tells the tragic story of hundreds of Turkish troops taken as prisoners and were brought to Cyprus during the Dardanelles War. The film was dedicated to fallen soldiers of Dardanelles War. Gökalp Yamen won the “Best Director Award” at the Lions POSTAL-74 short film competion.
Environmental Projects From Department of Public Relations and Promotion Various social responsibility studies have been carried out by Department of Public Relations and Promotion under Faculty of Communication since 2005 and most of these studies are on the environmental subjects. According to a press statement released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, the recycling projects has first time started with the “Blue Cap” project in 2011 and continued since then. The caps collected throughout the application of this project used to provide wheel chairs for disabled persons. The project was organised and carried out by Ufuk Altunç, lecturer of the Department of Public Relations and Promotion of Faculty of Communication, and students of the department. The results of the project not only provided significant support to the disabled people but raised environmental awareness at a certain level.
Students of NEU Hair Care and Beauty Services Department Visited ECE Private Elderly Nursing Home in Elderly Week. According to a press statement released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, the visit made by Yeşim Üstün Aksoy, Departmental Cordinator of Hair Care and Beauty Services, Nuray Kibrit, lecturer of the department, and students within the scope of Elderly Week and hair and beauty care services provided for the elderly living at the elderly nursing home. Students and teachers of Hair and Beauty Care Services Department expressed their feelings saying that they were much happy and grateful to be engaged in such a meaningful event and they are already looking for other events to deliver such services to those in need.
It was revealed that as part of the freshmen module titled as “RTC 101 Radio and Introduction to TV”, freshmen students of Near East University Faculty of Communication Department of Radio and TV visited Radio Vatan. The students attended the live programme of Eker Avcıl at Radio Vatan, and had a pleasant conversation together. According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the students visited Radio Vatan, a radio which functions under the body of Civil Defence Organisation. It was revealed that the students were provided information by the Head of Radio Vatan, Nediye İpek Zeytincioğlu, program maker and presenter Amber Eker Avcıl and Ece G. Borucu and that they had answered the questions asked by the students. Furthermore, it was pointed out that the students attended live streaming of Amber Eker Avcıl, exchanging information regarding the students’ future occupations. In addition to the above, it was stated that Amber Eker Avcıl, presenter of the radio programme, had emphasised and advised the students to start their careers as soon as possible, and that she had also stressed the significance of studying, education and attaining a general culture, which are all necessary for this job. Making a statement on the matter, Academic Member of Near East University, Dr. Sinem Kasımoğlu expressed that students of the university were provided to get both theoretical and practical information and experiences of the modules of the department and this was highly significant for the students. She ended her words by expressing gratitude to Radio Vatan for their support and hospitality.
Faculty of Communication of Near East University is calling attention with its well qualified staff, application centres, workshops, and with its policies in following the latest technologies in communication sector. Accrding to a press statement released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci, Acting Dean of Faculty of Communication, stated that it is known that the number of faculties specializing on communication issues is increasing due to the developments and needs in communication sector, however, these faculties must qualify their students so that their students can stand out with their qualificatins amongst their rivals. Keçeci also emphasized that training well qualified, distinctive students depends on employing well qualified staff and latest technologies supporting the infrastructure of the education system. Senior Academic Staff Implement Theory and Practice Faculty of Communication comprises four well-known, highly regarded departments; Department of Journalism, Department of Public Relations and Promotion, Department of Visual Communication and Design, and Department of Radio, TV and Cinema. The academic staff in charge of teaching for these departments are 8 professors, 3 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, 5 PhDs and other senior lecturers, 38 specialist staff in total. The Faculty also comprises a Journalism Centre where a weekly newspaper is issues regularly, Photography Studio where photography studies and various workshops on photography are carried out extensively, Public Relations Centre where projects related to social responsibility issues are carried out, Communication Research Centre where academic studies of students and staff are carried out, Near East Radio and TV Centre where students are carried out their internship studies and have the opportunity to conduct real life radio-TV applications. Faculty of Communication of the Near East University is regarded as one of the most efficient faculties as it provides the students and academic staff with all the latest equipment and teaching infrastructure required by the contemporary communication sector. Extensive Opportunities Faculty of Communication of NEU, which first time commenced its studies in 1996, currently offers extensive education opportunities to 621 undergraduate, 52 MA and 10 PhD students. The modern complex of faculty comprises classrooms with a capacity of 40 and 80 students, a research lab with a capacity of 80 students, a studio-lecture hall with a capacity of 200 people, and a department of radio-TV studies, fully equipped with the latest radio and TV devices that carry out live broadcast for 24 hours. The Faculty, offering education opportunities to students coming from various parts of the world, calls itself as the “Centre of New Age and the Most Dynamic Part of the University”.
Faculty of Communication of Near East University has given its graduates for the Fall Term of the Academic Year 2015-2016
The exhibition of the projects of the students of Department of Visual Communication and Design was visited. The graduation ceremony for the fall term of the academic year 2015-2016 of the Faculty of Communication of Near East University was actualised in orange hall of the Faculty building. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Vice Rector of NEU, Prof. Dr. Şenol Bektaş; Prof. Dr. Orhan Çiftçi from NEU Institute; Dean Representative of Faculty of Communication, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci, NEU Heads of Departments; Academic Members; students and guests attended the graduation ceremony. It was further expressed that the graduation ceremony had started with one minute’s silence, followed by the national anthem. Subsequently, Taha B., freshmen at the Department of TV Technology and Radio; and Gökalp Yamen from Department of Radio, TV and Cinema gave a mini concert to the guests at the ceremony. This was later followed by graduates’ taking their oaths. Additionally, it was expressed that Representative Dean of NEU Faculty of Communication Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci had made a speech, emphasising the significance of the day. Moreover, Gökçe stated that the academic staff of the faculty was highly competent and that recently the faculty had recruited new academic staff who were surely to even strengthen the staff even further. She further said that the students of the faculty were from six different countries and therefore had an international student profile. She ended her words by stating that they, as the NEU Faculty of Communication, were rather happy and honoured to be raising competent individuals in their fields who also had a sense for social responsibility. pıc update Speaking on behalf of the graduating students, Tarık Ferik, graduate of Department of Visual Communication and Design, expressed that over the years he had lived many memorable and productive moments at the NEU and ended his words by expressing many thanks to the academic staff of the Department and wished his fellow students the best of luck. It was expressed that following the above stated speeches, the graduates were presented their diplomas. Then, the exhibition where students’ projects were exhibited was visited.
