English Language and Literature

This programme covers a broad range of theoretical approaches and practical skills for the analysis of literature, giving students the opportunity to develop critical and methodological frameworks while undertaking close readings of a wide range of texts.
The programme seeks to provide students with:

  • An appreciation of a range of critical and theoretical perspectives on literature
  • An understanding of the development of English literature with a range of political, social and aesthetic contexts
  • A comprehension of the various styles, genres and media in which English literature has been produced

Applicants are expected to have a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English Language and Literature. However, students with a degree in a related subject may also be eligible for admission. Non-standard entrants will be considered on an individual basis.
The program leading to the M.A. degree is a two year (4 semesters) program of full-time study involving seven taught courses (21 credits) , one seminar course and a thesis.
The M.A. program is carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Institute of Social Sciences.

ELL 501 – Comparative Narratology: Adaptation and 19th Century English Literature
This unit is designed to engage students critically with key debates concerning literature and screen adaptation. Seminars will be based around detailed comparative study of a selection of 19th century texts and more recent screen adaptations. In the process, the unit will assess the strategies and negotiations involved in the transition from page to screen, tracing their transformation from ‘classic’ texts identified with ‘high culture’ to commercially viable forms of popular culture.In addition to examining the technical processes by which a text is adapted from one medium to another, in other words, we will consider what is at stake culturally in this process. The module focuses on dramatic adaptation, featuring original works and screenings.

ELL 502 – Cultural Studies
Over the past three decades a new, seemingly all-embracing field of study has developed, primarily in the U.K. and in the U.S.A. Cultural Studies is notoriously difficult to define, but one way to begin to understand the concept is to consider culture in its widest possible sense. The entire series of signifying practices of a society are put under analysis, in such a way that these practices become a “text” to be read and interpreted. These texts can be found in literature, the media, film and television, art exhibits and even economic agreements. One of the issues that needs to be addressed in any discussion of Cultural Studies is just how wide or narrow its scope should be, as Cultural Studies is poised to supplement or even supersede the traditional focus of literary studies in English Departments. In this course we will analyze the core concepts of the field by focusing on a variety of 19th century texts, in the hope that students will assess these using the critical tools that Cultural Studies makes available. Using directed reading, seminar discussion and short, informal class-based lectures, we will explore issues such as social class, race, gender, crime, sexuality, morality, imperialism and social investigation.

ELL 503 – Contemporary Literary Theory:
This module provides an analytical and chronological forum for addressing the role of criticism in 20th century intellectual history by exploring ways in which meaning is created and modern identities are shaped. In more practical terms, the course seeks, through a number of case studies, to address and ultimately challenge a number of critical paradigms such as signification, subjecthood, gender and class through selected readings from some of the most prominent scholars in the field, including Walter Benjamin, Karl Marx, Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Slavoj Zizek and Jacques Derrida.

ELL 504 – Stylistics
Stylistics and Language Teaching studies the features of situational distinctive uses of language and tries to establish principles capable of accounting for the particular choices made by individual and social groups in their use of language. General stylistics, literary stylistics and phonostylistics are the topics considered. The topics are studied in terms of Language Teaching.

ELL 505 – Translation Theory
This course presents a body of literature on translation theory, strongly influenced by modern linguistics. The purpose is to show that translation consists of transferring the meaning of the source language into the receptor language; this is done by going from the form of the first language to the form of a second language by way of semantic structure.

ELL 506 – British Poetry
Various kinds of aspects of poetry are studied, and its elements are analysed through the help of poems. The role of poetry is discussed and related to the structure of language.

ELL 507 – Applied Linguistics
The primary concern of this course is the application of linguistic theories, methods and findings to the teaching and learning of foreign languages, and to the elucidation of language problems which may arise in other areas of experience.

ELL 508 – Advanced Writing Skills
Practice in conceiving, composing and polishing essays, articles and reviews on largely controversial cultural, political, social, historical, artistic and literary subjects. The context assumed is what the British call “high journalism”. The aim of this course is to generate materials professional enough for publication.

ELL 509 – English Language and Linguistics
It introduces students to the theoretical, descriptive and comparative biases of the language from a linguistic perspective.

ELL 510 – English Syntax
This course is intended to give the student a great deal of information about English Syntax. It uses transformational grammar for its purpose.

ELL 511 – Language Transfer
This course presents a comprehensive and original account of the native language transfer and its role in second language learning. It also surveys a large body of literature and examines data from many different languages.

ELL 512 – Discourse Analysis
This course studies how sentences in spoken and written language form larger meaningful units such as miniature texts, paragraphs, conversation and interviews. The role of this discipline will also be discussed and related to language teaching.

ELL 513 – Sociolinguistics
This course provides an introduction to the field of sociolinguistics for second and foreign language teaching and learning. It also provides students with the opportunity to carry out linguistic and sociolinguistic analyses at macro- and micro-levels.

ELL 515 – Advanced Research Techniques
This course is designed to emphasise scientific methods, their properties and concepts; it attempts to teach how to make use of a scientific study and how to utilize it in a certain format, and it also teaches how to use Library and primary sources in any research project, paper writing and an MA. Thesis writing.
