NAME OF THE COURSE : Research Methods

The content of the course is formed with research methods in psychology (observation, correlation studies, experimental method, case studies) and with basic statistical methods. Students are expected to design a study, evaluate the data with SPSS program at computer and prepare a project. Students will gain ability to define the groups, to determine the differences between groups, to evaluate correlation among variables.

Emphasize is given to psychotic disorders and mood disorders. Empirical and theoretical investigation of the etiology and symptoms of these disorders and dynamic and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy treatment approaches form the content of the course.

The content of the course is formed from studies about age-related physical, psychomotor, cognitive and affective changes from a life span development perspective. Recent research findings and issues related to studying aging are stressed.

It covers the subjects where developmental psychology and psychopathology intersect. The dynamic of development and change and how parental attitudes may affect this period is discussed. The course covers etiology, prevalence, diagnostic criteria and treatment approaches for disorders usually first diagnosed during childhood.

The purpose of this course is to understand mental retardation both from a functional and systems perspective. To meet this goal, this course is organized accordingly; mental retardation from a historical and legal perspective, characteristics of persons with mental retardation, educational considerations and curriculum adaptations and programming across the lifespan.

Students present their cases to the supervisor and discuss the case. In this course the students have the practical knowledge and experience in intentional interview, observation of the client, selection of the psychometric evaluation tool and also making a complete case presentation in clinical and psychiatric settings.

Examination of the modern personality theories, including those proposed by Freud and his followers, learning theorists, trait theorists, social-learning theorists and humanists. Current research about personality, using modern methods also is reviewed.

This course will introduce students to the background, theory, application, and skills related to CBT. This course will examine the historical and theoretical bases including the work of Bandura, Ellis, and Beck and introduce the techniques and cognitive interventions used in CBT. Topics will include modifying unwanted habits and behaviors, dealing with distorted thoughts, improving the sense of efficacy, and promoting self-motivation.
