Department of Urology of the Hospital of Near East University started offering medical assistance and treatment to patients in June 2010 with a team of doctors including Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cemil Uygur and Assist. Prof. Dr. Levent Mert Günay. At the moment, the following doctors are providing treatment(s) at the out-patient’s clinic and surgery of the Department of Urology: As full-time; Prof. Dr. Ali Ulvi Önder and Assist. Prof. Dr. Levent Mert Günay, and as part-time; Assist. Prof. Dr. Erol Uçaner. Just as all the branches of the Hospital of NEU, they are working hard to provide a high quality education to medicine students and offer the best possible diagnosis-treatment procedures for the patients. The hospital is achieving success in the diagnosis of illnesses as its units equipped with modern technology, experienced specialists and technical staff.
Radiology is the most benefitted and utilized examination method of urologic illnesses. The Department of Radiology of Hospital of NEU has Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography, Ultrasonography and all other modern, digital devices used in conventional radiology. In addition to above, the Department of Nuclear Medicine supports the Department of Urology by providing Renal Scintigraphy- which is used in determining functions of kidneys, Whole Body Bone Scintigraphy- which is used in staging urological cancers and PET CT, for the diagnosis and follow up of urological kidney illnesses.
Being equipped with devices considered as technological wonders of our modern age, the laboratory of the Hospital of NEU is highly utilized in the diagnosis of urological illnesses. In addition, immunologic, genetic and all modern applications are also facilitated to support the Department of Urology.
In the treatment processes of urological illnesses, Hospital of Near East University also makes use of an operation theatre-which is equipped with latest technology, relevant instruments, devices and a highly qualified and experienced staff.
In the world of today, a method called “minimal invasive surgery” is utilized in urological surgery applications. The aims of this method are; to carry out surgeries through the use of miniaturized instruments so as to decrease the suffering of the patients, and also decrease the level of possible complications after surgery. In addition, this method is advantageous to patients since they need to spend less days in the hospital and get back to their jobs/ their normal lives earlier than they would with other classical methods. The Hospital of NEU comprises almost every tool and instruments needed for the minimal invasive surgery applications, besides having highly qualified staff to implement the applications.
In majority of the urological surgeries, minimal invasive surgery applications have become routine. Minimal invasive surgery consists of laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery applications. These applications are mainly utilized in diseases such as urolithiasis and urological cancers. Our hospital successfully facilitates treatment of nephrolith through the use of closed surgery. A method called “Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy” is a surgery procedure to remove stones from the kidney by a small puncture wound, up to about 1cm, through the skin.
Another method called Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery, which is a procedure for carrying out surgery inside the kidney by using a viewing tube called fiberoptic endoscope, is utilized in the treatment of stones in the kidneys. In other words, this method involves going into the urinary tract with the use of a flexible urethroscope (from top to bottom) and crushing the stones, to be later taken out- as a whole or as crushed parts. The Hospital of NEU has all the necessary technical equipment to facilitate all the applications mentioned above.
Laparoscopy, which is one of the minimal invasive applications, has broad uses in urological practices and is used at our hospital as an alternative to open surgeries. Laparascopic Partial Nephrectomy is a minimal invasive approach which is used in; removing the kidney that may be due to having tumours in it (nephrectomy), in the reconstruction of the narrowness in the urinary tract (urethral-pelvic junctions), and in the treatment of certain calculus. In addition to the above, our hospital facilitates this advantageous method in the treatment of; urethra and bladder diseases and in treatments of prostate tumours. We are very proud to state that, our hospital comprises the necessary infrastructure to facilitate laparoscopic operations.
Our hospital therewithal, has the staff which implements operations needed in the treatment of urological cancers. These operations are regarded s radical surgeries and consist of; radical cystectomy, prostatectomy, nephrectomy and orchiectomy. Except orchiectomy, the others are major and are operations which considerably long in duration. Especially radical cystectomy is an operation which lasts 5-6 hours. Our staff is able to facilitate all of the operations mentioned above.
Besides minimal invasive and radical surgeries, our hospital provides treatments of many urological diseases which require the facilitation of open surgeries (retroperitoneal fibrosis, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, retroperitoneal tumours, transurethral-ureterostomy, bladder augmentation, etc). The Hospital of NEU has successful history in the diagnosis of prostate enlargement-which is not due to cancer, and in relative medical and surgical treatments (closed prostate surgeries).
The diagnosis and treatments of diseases of female urology and neurology will be supported with the expertise of Prof. Dr. Oktay Demirkesen who is an academic staff of the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine.
