The Neurosurgery Department, having been established before the year 2010 began with Prof. Dr. Erkan Kaptanoglu. A formal opening in our department was then followed. In a short period of having begun Asst. Prof. Dr. Ferhat Harman joined our department. Our clinic is in successfull operation in accordance with the needs of the island. Since the opening of our department, many complicated cases have been referred to us, thus making it become a notable clinic within the area.
In our department, many surgical procedures such as neurovascular, neurooncology, pediatric neurosurgery, spinal and peripheral nervous system surgery is carried out. Emergency service, computerised tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, intensive care, angiography unit and operating theatres are all housed under one complex.
Experimental research in spinal cord injuries and cerebral ischernia is continuing within our clinic.
Our clinic plays an important role within the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). There has been a very notable reduction in the amount of patients applying to go to Turkey or South Cyprus for their treatment. With the opening of an academic hospital, the need to refer patients to Turkey has decreased a substantial amount. Students from various other countries come to the 9 Universities within the TRNC. Families abroad are at ease, and are confident in knowing that our hospital at present has very high worldwide standards. Foreigners living on the island also prefer our hospital. Cypriot patients from Europe, especially England also prefer to be treated in their own country. Many patients from the Motherland come to our clinic for treatment and for operations.
On the 3rd floor, our hospital offers services together with two other polyclinics. In our department, diagnosis and treatment for illnesses is available to patients such as those with spinal anomalies, cervical and lumbar disc herniation, degenerative spinal pathologies, brain tumours, intracranial hemorrhages and cerebral aneurysms. All these make up the majority of illnesses. Furthermore, operations such as spinal tumors, cerebrovascular malformations, spinal infections, peripheral nerve pathologies, diagnosis and treatment is carried out successfully.
On the 4th floor of the clinical hospital there are 26 patient rooms and two extendable VIP rooms. Our standard rooms are 12m2, with WC, shower, sink basin, TV, central air-conditioning, and internet. There is suitable accommodation in the instance of the patients’ companions who wish to stay within our clinic. We carry out approximately 30 major operations per month, together with other common microsurgical operations. Our operating theatres, which are of high standards contain special lighting, isolation and hardware systems. Sometimes, operations can be viewed live on the internet.
In our department, two of which are isolated, is made up of twelve intensive care patient rooms. We offer a fully equipped service with efficient mechanical ventilators and trained personnel. Since its establishment, long term treatment has been given to very intensive care patients.
On the whole traumatic patients are to a larger extent those coming to the neurosurgery emergency care unit. Unfortunately, within the TRNC head and spine injuries, due to reasons such as traffic accidents, falling from heights and the like are experienced. A large extent of these accidents are young patients. Patient injuries such as intracranial hemorrhages and spinal injuries threaten these patients well being, therefore fast and efficient treatment plays an important role in saving their lives.
Concerning neurosurgery, our department is fully equipped to instantly deal with any kind of emergency situation. Patient examinations are successfully made due to the latest technology in our hospital. Alongside CT and MRI units patient examinations are successfully made, and without wasting any time treatment can be carried out on them.
Since our establishment, our clinic has offered emergency care and has been in operation to many patients both on the weekends as well as in the evenings. Furthermore, apart from trauma patients, surgery of intracranial hemorrhages, surgery of lumbar and cervical disc herniations, surgery of brain and spinal tumors and similar emergency surgical interventions is carried out.
Education and Research Activities
Our department in the Faculty of Medicine offers classes to semester 3 and 5 students, as well as neurosurgical work experience. Additionally, together with clinical educational programs, clinical case discussions carried out twice every week, a literature hour once a week, as well as regular monthly seminars and meetings. Case study discussions are part of our educational daily activities.
As part of research activities clinical and laboratory studies also continue.
