Sports Medicine

According to the International Federation of Sports Medicine(FIMS), Sports Medicine is a theoretical and applied branch of medicine that focus on exercise, training and sports, examines the influences of movement deficiency (sedentary lifestyle) on healthy and diseased individuals, carries out diagnosis, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of illnesses related to sports in all age groups and in both sexes . In order to enhance the quality of life, promoting the participation of individuals in exercise and sports programs, solving the problems as soon as possible that emerged during the activity and encouraging people to resume activities and exercises are the priorities of Sports Medicine. Sports Medicine can provide not only sports injuries treatment but also deal with different fields of exercise and sports performances.

Various disciplines are in cooperation in order to reveal the positive and negative effects of sports on human health to carry out the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders and deal with the medical aspects of athletes’ performance within the frame of clinical trials. These disciplines consist of physical education experts, sports psychologist, sports physiotherapist, nutritionist and sports physician.

Main missions of Sports Medicine:
a) Determining exercise sufficiency by medical assessment
b) Making research on protection and improvement of human and public health on participation in exercise; to support educational role play;
c) Preparing the list of exercise activities in order to protect and develop the health,
d) Conducting the treatment, measurement, assessment and the diagnosis of acute and chronic health problems related to sports, plan medical and sport rehabilitation programs, orient patients to other branches of medicine(if required)
e) Rendering first aid at sports events as a sports medicine doctor (sports medic)
f) Providing health care services in sports clubs as a team physician
g) Participating in anti-doping research
h) Designing exercise prescriptions for diabetes, asthma, obesity, hypertension and various psychiatric disorders (depression, insomnia…) which requires specific exercise programs and follow-up the effects of exercises in the treatment.

The Sports physician does not only provide health care services to registered professional player but also performs general heath examinations of beginners, offers solutions or treatments relevant to health problems or injuries due to sports activities and provides the players with appropriate information about the benefits of sports activities in maintaining and improving health. Diseases, which require specific exercises for the treatment, are also considered within the concept of sports medicine. Sports Medicine is a multidisciplinary branch dealing with all sort of problems related with health and performances of sportsmen. The Sports Medicine can not only provide treatment for sports injuries from other disciplines such as orthopedics and traumatology, physiotherapy and rehabilitations but also provides the players with sustainable performance offered by physiology, nutrition, psychology and physical education. Consequently, the sports medicine is in close relation with many other health disciplines. Our department carries out research, training and services in order to enhance the quality of life, maintain and improve the health of players and help them to reach higher levels of performance. Players and other individuals, who desire to benefit from our services, directly apply to the department. The solutions and the treatments relevant to health problems due to sports activities are primarily conducted at the department that works in cooperation with other health disciplines. The Department of Sports Medicine participates in training and seminars for making presentations about the importance of exercise and human health which various sports federations organize and also attends seminars, symposium, panel discussion and congress in order to inform players, trainers and healthy individuals who desire to do exercise. Within this scope, our department carries out various studies in order to maintain and improve the health and the sportive performance of the players.

Preventive Athletic Healthcare Services
Preventive healthcare services are fundamental in maintaining good health and constitute the first step in health. Athletic health examinations administrated during obtaining professional license for sportive activities are applied to determine and approve the exercise sufficiency of individuals. It involves a wide range of health services and differs in accordance with the variations of sportive branches. While professional footballers are required to have a wide array of medical tests and examinations, such tests and examinations are not obligation for amateur players. Licensing examinations are very important and should be applied seriously. These examinations are not only essential to assess the performance of beginners but also contribute to prevent undesired health cases possibly happen during sportive activities. Currently active players are also required to have regular health controls in order to maintain a sustainable performance. Healthcare training is an effective method in providing healthcare services and must be progressive. The players are provided with solid educational background about the reasons that cause injuries in sportsman and the precautions that must be taken to prevent injuries, physical risks of sports, and on first aid and similar issues. It is well known that sports injuries are rarely encountered by sportsmen who received healthcare training, so they can more readily cope with the sports injuries. Physical sufficiency and performance tests help to determine the strength, endurance, flexibility, agility and the body type of sportsman. These tests are significant for preventing and improving the performance of sportsmen, selection their sports abilities and sports branches. Besides, they are preventive for possible sports injuries.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases and Injuries
Musculoskeletal disorders most often result of sports injuries and they are rarely life treating. Almost all sort of diseases encountered in the community may found in sportsman. The solutions and the treatments relevant to health problems due to sports activities are conducted at the department that works in cooperation with other health disciplines of the NEU Hospital.

Sports Rehabilitation Services
Physiology of sportsman differs in accordance with other individuals. These differences should be taken into account before planning the rehabilitation process. The longer a player is out of sportive activities due to injuries, the performance loss is rather higher. The injured players are assessed to detect deficiencies and disorders. Then, they are provided with physical or psychological rehabilitation programs to treat the detected cases. Those who are treated and recovered can return the sportive activities. Wrong treatment owing to wrong diagnosis and incomplete treatment during the rehabilitation program can either cause the disorder to be a chronic one or a delay in player’s returning to sportive activities. After completing the first step of the rehabilitation, the player should follow a specific and private program. This program does not only aim to provide the player’s return to the sportive activities but also help to minimize the risk of player’s possible sports injuries.

Exercises in Chronic Diseases
Today, lack of regular physical activity is a significant contributor to various chronic diseases. An organized and well-conceived exercise prescription for the treatment of various diseases is an increasingly common therapeutic factor all over the world. It is known that a well-organized exercise prescription has positive effect both on life expectancy and quality of life. The exercise prescription is used as a supportive care in the treatment of various health problems such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and depression and it shows significant and positive effects on the prognosis of the disease. In the light of this information, the Department of Sports Medicine carries out consultation and examination and designs private exercise prescriptions for patients.
