Professor Nazmi Özer studied Chemistry at the Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He received his MSc in 1972 from Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences and PhD in 1974 from Hacettepe University, School of Medicine, and Department of Medical Biochemistry. He was appointed as Associate Professor in 1979 and as Professor in 1988 at Hacettepe University, School of Medicine, Department of Medical Biochemistry. In 1982, he completed his Specialization in Clinical Biochemistry at Department of Medical Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Cumhuriyet University. He was appointed as Education Coordinator in 2008 at Near East University, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Özer served as president of Basic Medical Sciences (2008-2014), Coordinator of Phase I (2008-2014) and Phase II (2009-2014). He is serving as the Director of Multidisiplinary Laboratories (2008 – ….), President of Medical Biochemistry Department (2008 – …..) and Executive Member of Heath Sciences Institute (2008 – ….). He NEU Senate member since 2013.

He has been studying enzyme purification and kinetics, enzyme immobilization, enzyme targets in cancer therapy, biomaterials, oxidative stress and thiol buffer systems, Parkinson’s disease and mitochondrial DNA. Recently his research focuses on the effects of antidepressant drugs, insectisides, pestisides and herbisides on protective enzyme systems. He received scholarships for his studies at Max-Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine, Göttingen, Germany (1974 – 1976), Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) Short Term Scholarship, Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm, Sweden (1986), NATO Collaborative Project with Dr. Roberta F. Colman, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Delaware University, USA (1987), NATO Senior-Level Scholarship, CRC Molecular Toxicology and Biochemistry Group, Department of Biochemistry, University College of London (UCL), England (1993). His research was awarded by Challenge Award, Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) in 1985 and NOVARTIS Pharmaceutical Technology Research Awards (First place) in 2000. He served as a President of Refik Saydam Hygiene Center between 1994 – 1996.

He has published several articles in international and national journals, participated in international and national meetings as a Keynote and Symposium Speaker. He served as a General Secreatary (1977-1990) and President of Turkish Biochemical Society (1990-2000 and 2002-2015) and as president, he organized 26 national meetings, 7 Balkan and 3 International Congresses (FEBS2006, IFCC-WorldLab2014 and FEBS2016) and he is elected as president of Federation European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) twice (2007-2008 and 2017-2018) .
