Objectives of the degree program

The aims of the Department of Computer Engineering are; bringing up experienced and knowledgeable individuals equipped with theoretical and practical information related to the discipline, and at the same time, bring up competent individuals who are able to contribute to the developments and research studies in the field, and be managers and instructors to continue to bring up qualified people who can effectively serve in this field.

The department aims to raise researchers, specialists and instructors for the field of computer engineering discipline and by this way, help to meet the demands in relevant industries, job centres and higher education institutions. In addition to this, carry out research, offer elective computer courses to students of other departments and provide help for faculty members in their research studies that require the utilization of computers.

The MSc. Program in Computer Engineering aims to train specialized computer engineers at master’s level that are capable of understanding the problems stated in different fields of Computer Engineering and having a background and needed skills to carry out high-quality research with aim of solving these problems.

The aim of the Master’s programs is to enable students to acquire the ability to conduct academic research, which involves acquisition, evaluation and interpretations of information.

The purpose is to offer students who has BSc degree in Computer Engineering an opportunity to broaden their knowledge in the computer engineering and its applications.

The basic objectives of the Computer Engineering graduate program can be outlined as follows:

  • To acquire a strong foundation in Computer Engineering area relevant to the current needs of industry to allow them to successfully compete for demanding and high quality jobs
  • Analyze problems, propose algorithmic solutions, and implement them correctly and efficiently by applying their knowledge of mathematics, computing, systems and development tools.
  • Propose engineering solutions using the information and communication technologies for the related problems of industry and government.
  • To acquire clear communication abilities, ethical and social responsibilities for teamwork.
  • Make positive contributions to their community and society by applying skills and abilities learned during their undergraduate program in computer engineering
  • Improve knowledge and skills through lifelong learning and graduate studies.

According to Academic Regulation for Graduate Studies a master’s program is comprised of a minimum of seven courses, not being less than 21 national credits, one graduate seminar course, other educational activities and thesis study (9 credits). The aim of the master’s program is to enable students to acquire the ability to conduct scientific research leading to the acquisition, evaluation and interpretation of knowledge. The program consists of a minimum of seven courses, MSc thesis,  not being less than 30 national credits in total, and a non-credit graduate seminar.

Learning outcomes of the degree program

The MS degree program intends to prepare students and graduate them with a number of abilities and skills. Learning outcomes are presented below and they are accessible on the NEU web site to all students, staff members, and all the other parties interested.

There is no Technical Committee and Subject Specific Criteria (SSC) for Computer Engineering. The Technical Committee 02 for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (TC02) was chosen because the learning outcomes of the MSc. degree according to ASIIN’s subject-specific criteria for TC02 suited the best. Also Subject Specific Criteria relating to the accreditation of Master’s degree programs in Informatics is reviewed.

Learning outcomes of the MSc program include development of:

  1. An ability to understand and apply extensive advanced knowledge of mathematic-scientific and engineering principles
  1. An ability to analyze and solve problems scientifically
  2. An ability to apply innovative computational methods to problem-solving
  3. An ability to design and conduct advanced software projects
  4. An ability to assess applicable methods and their limits
  5. An ability to identify, find and procure necessary information.
  6. An ability to plan and carry out analytic, model and experimental investigations.
  7. An understanding of the role of engineers in society.

Admissions and entry requirements

Students applying in the MS degree are supposed to have BS degree in Computer Engineering or fields closely related to the Computer Engineering. The admissions and entry requirements ensure that the students who are admitted to the degree program possess the required competences.

Students admitted to the department come from three sources:

  • Local students, who are citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)
  • Students from Turkey, who are Turkish citizens
  • Students from other countries (foreign students)

Admission to MS program is based on applicants’ academic success in the undergraduate program and their Academic Personnel and Graduate Study Entrance Examination (ALES) score.

Applicants to the master’s programs must meet the following requirements:

  • BSc diploma demonstrating  that you have nearly completed a Bachelor’s programme in a main subject which is closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying..
  • Degree and cumulative grade point average: Applicants should submit BSc transcript describing the courses, their credits, the grades for each course and cumulative grade point average of the students. The applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average equal to or above 2.5.
  • ALES score: Applicants must have a minimum ALES score of 55 (fifty five). ALES score is required for the Turkish citizens only. It is not required for the applicants from countries other than Turkey, including the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus or other countries.
  • Foreign Language Proficiency Examination: Applicants must earn a minimum score of 60 (sixty) out of 100 (one hundred) on the language proficiency examination for graduate students conducted by the Department of English Language Teachingat NEU. This minimum score put into effect by the department in 2014/2015 academic year.  Applicants who fulfil one of the following conditions will be exempted from the English language proficiency examination required by the Graduate School for applications:
  • Applicants have got the equivalent scores on the TOEFL- Test of English as a Foreign Language (computer-based test: 184 and/or paper-based test: 514),
  • Applicants have got the IELTS – International English Language Testing System ( 5.5 ).
  • The motivation for taking the programme, the interest of student to the department and his/her expectation should be clarified. Description  of the  hypothetical thesis project; the type of a project of the student ,  also brief explanation  exploration and expectation of  the  thesis project  are necessary. The student need to provide  thesis topics and elaborate his/her particular interests. A brief summary of the thesis work or the final assignment (to be) done for on Bachelor’s programme, including information on the credits earned, grade, and full workload need to be described.
  • Two reference letters in English.
  • Assessment: The assessment of applications for master’s programs is based on the ALES score, the undergraduate cumulative grade point average, and an interview conducted by the Computer Engineering Department..

Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree from a field other than that of the master’s program in Computer Engineering need to take some courses of BS program in Computer Engineering to compensate for the deficiencies. The department is decided what the courses for the deficiencies need to be taken. Students taken courses for the deficiencies must have earned a cumulative grade point average equal to or above 2.5.

Students are required to fill an application form before they are accepted to the university. A blank application form is shown in Appendix C. The university seeks to admit academically qualified students who desire a challenging and comprehensive education in the departments. The filled application form is available online. Students can either send their applications online or alternatively by post.

Students who have successfully completed at least one semester in a MS program at the NEU or at any other institution of higher education may apply for transfer to MS program in Computer Engineering. A maximum of 2/3 of the courses taken at the previous institution or program can be transferred. Students who are at the stage of writing their master’s thesis cannot apply for transfer.

  • Curriculum/content

The curriculum lays the foundation for teaching and the planning (individual study plans) and implementation of studies. The Head and the teaching staff of the Computer Engineering Department are the participants of the curriculum process. The Computer Engineering Department operates in close cooperation with the other degree programs of Engineering Faculty and the University. Curriculum work also takes into account the needs of working life, which are identified through the collaborative project work with the industry and the public sector.


The MS degree Program in Computer Engineering takes 2 years and leads to a Master’s degree of Science in Computer Engineering. The Master’s degree requires the completion of 120 ECTS credits. During the 2-years study students are offered usually 3 modules per semester.


Master program consists of seven courses- two courses from theory and system areas, five elective courses, one seminar course, and a thesis. 30 credit hours is required to earn a master’s degree: 9 master’s thesis credits and a minimum of 21 graduate-level course credits. The student should maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.00 at the end of the study. A minimum grade in any course must be at least “CC”. The period of study in the Master’s program is minimum 3, maximum 6 semesters.

The professional competence in MSc program is developed by the courses of elective subject choices. In the Master’s Degree Program five of seven courses are elective. In exceptional cases, the elective subject can be chosen from other degree programs, if it is suitable for the degree. The application has to be approved by the Head of Computer Engineering Department. With technical respect free electives on offer, students of the Master’s degree program may choose a certain specialization track to get a more distinguished qualifications profile. The students can choose three specializations, which include the following elective courses:
