Prof. Dr. Ata ATUN is a Turkish Cypriot and was born in 1948. He graduated from T.E.D.Ankara College and Şişli College and then enrolled to Al Hikma American University, (Branch of Boston University) in Baghdad, Iraq (now the University of Baghdad) for his undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering. Granted with several scholarships, obtained his BSc degree in 1971. Later, carried out a graduate study at Century University, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1987 and a postgraduate study at the Century University, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, and obtained a PhD degree in 1989. Completed a post doctorate program in Washington, DC, USA in December 1994. Obtained his Associated Professor degree in 1998 and became a full professor in 2005 at the Near East University, Nicosia, Cyprus. Attended summer courses in Journalism in Prague held by Charles University of Prague and The Fund for American Studies of Washington DC, USA in 2007.
His research and papers are published in several academic publications.
He is the author of 13 text books and 4 lecture notes, all written in English, currently used at the Near East University of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Founder of SAMTAY FOUNDATION (Suna and Ata ATUN, History of Famagusta, Research and Literature Foundation), a research and literature foundation, of which objects and goals are based on “Transform the past and present of the Town of Famagusta on to documents to be carried to the future.” The foundation released 40 books on the cultural history of the Turkish People in Cyprus.
He is the author of 6 books on Cyprus History and 10 books on Cyprus Politics,
Appointed as the Negotiator and the Team Leader to the Turkish Cyprus Delegation for the sub-committee negotiations on the Annan Plan between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, organized under the auspices of the United Nations in February, March & April 2004 at the Headquarters of the United Nations at the abandoned International Airport, Nicosia.
Mr. Atun went for politics in 1976 and elected as a Member of Parliament, representing the constituency of Famagusta in the National Assembly at the age of 27. He was appointed as a political advisor to Mr. R. R. Denktash, the president of TRNC (2001), Mr. S. Denktash the Deputy Prime Minister and President of Democratic Party of North Cyprus (2002-2006) and had an active role in the opening process of the borders line (check points) between North Cyprus (Turkish sector) and South Cyprus (Greek sector) on 23rd April 2003.
He is the Founding Chairman of the Board of Directors of the local newspaper called “Cumhuriyet Kuzey Kıbrıs” established in September 2003. Appointed as the Chairman to the “TRNC Development Bank” in January 2005 and fulfilled this duty till September 2006, elected as the member of Board to the International Scientific Academy of Turkish World in December 2005. In May 2010, appointed by the President of TRNC to the Advisory Board of Presidential Negotiation Committee.
Since 2002 his articles on politics, now over 1500, published in local newspapers.
Married and is the father of a son and a daughter.
