Ö.Tılsım RAIF was born in Ankara in 1971. Due to her father’s job at the United Nations, she had the opportunity to travel to and live in several Middle-eastern countries and Africa. All the while, she attended English Medium schools thus establishing a solid foundation in English. The family moved to Ankara in 1983. She attended TED Ankara College and graduated in 1989 after successfully completing TED Secondary School and TED High School. She was accepted into the ELL Department (English Language and Literature) at Bilkent University. After graduating with Honors in 1993, she began her Master’s Degree in the same department. A year later she graduated and became employed as an Instructor at Middle East Technical University, Department of Basic English. During her employment between the years 1994-2002, she successfully completed her second Master’s Degree in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language).

Ö. Tılsım Raif moved to Cyprus in 2002 and worked at Girne American University in the 2002-2003 Academic Year. She has attended numerous workshops and seminars in Cyprus and in Turkey during her career. She was employed as an Instructor in the Foundation Department at Near East University from 2003-2015. In 2015, she began to work as an Instructor and Lecturer in the Department of Translation and Interpretation, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In addition to being a lecturer, she has undertaken administrative duties as well and has since re-structured and updated the four-year and 2-year program of the Department of Translation and Interpretation. Tılsım R. Kurtbir is married.
