Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cavit ATALAR

Cavit Atalar was born on February 20, 1948 in Yağmuralan (Vroişa). He graduated first in his class from Ankara University Geological Engineering Department in 1973. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1980. Cavit Atalar joined the university in 1994 as an Assistant Professor of geotechnical engineering. In 2001 was promoted to the associate professor position.

During the last decade Cavit Atalar has performed more than 200 academic activities, 90 presentations and publications in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering field. The Historical Bedestan restoration project which he has performed the geotechnical investigations won the 2009 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award. He is the author and co-author of 2 international conference proceeding books, 2 international conference abstract books, 12 booklets, A total of 10 articles which 6 of them in international journals of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, Geological Society, London, Engineering Geology Special Publications and International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, one invited article in itü journal, 20 papers in international, 14 papers in Türkiye, 8 papers in Cyprus conference proceeding books, 5 international conference abstracts, 4 extended conference abstracts, in 3 conferences invited speaker, 14 conference presentations, 5 international and one national project reports and 6 technical reports. 2 of the papers at internatioınal conferences are at the International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and 3 of the papers at European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering proceeding books which are held every four years.

Cavit Atalar, was a panelist in 3 conferences, 6 of them international, session president in more than 30 conferences, 6 of them international, member of the scentific and advisory committee in more than 10 conferences.

He was a chair or a member of the organizing committee of 6 international and 8 national conferences. He was the chair of the organizing committee together with the President of the Turkish National Committee Prof.Dr. Ergün Toğrul and the President of the Turkish National Committee Prof.Dr. Ahmet Sağlamer of the 1. and 2. International Conference on New Developments in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering which were organised jointly by the Turkish National Committee of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and Near East University respectively.

Editor-in-chief of the Geosound journal between 2002-2004. Member of the editorail board of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering since 2007. Reviewer of the Geotechnical and Geological Engineering since 2002 and the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering since 2007. “Bearing capacity of embedded strip foundation on geogrid-reinforced sand” with Patra and Das, published on 2005 in “Geotextiles and Geomembranes” is one of the top 10 cited articles.

Project coordinator of 3 international projects (“Swelling Clays: A Continuous Threat to the Build Environment of Cyprus”, “Geotechnical Investigation of Bedestan, Lefkoşa” and “Geotechnical Investigation of Armenian Church and Monastry Site, Lefkoşa”) and member of a team of 3 international projects (“Oakland Seismic Hazard Project, USA”, “Occupational Health and Safety ” and “Sustainable use of the abandoned mines and quarries”). Project coordinator of 2 national projects (Engineering Properties of North Cyprus Evaporates and Geotechnical Investigation of Near East University), and member of a team of 2 national projects (Rocks of North Cyprus and Serdarlı Landslide). He served two terms as member of the Union of the Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects and President of the Chamber of Mining Metallurgy and Geological Engineering and a member of a commission of the Nicosia Master Plan.

Cavit Atalar is married with 3 children and is a faculty at Near East University since 1994.
