Near East University DESAM Institute: “TRNC’s Corona Virus R0 Value is 2.06”

R0 value must be below 1 in order to control the outbreak Near East University DESAM Mathematical Modeling Research Group announced that the “R0” value (the number of contamination) of the coronavirus epidemic in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is 2.06. The “R0” value, known as the basic transmission number, shows how many people an infected person carrying the virus can infect others. Near East University DESAM Institute Mathematical Modeling Research Group leader Prof. Dr. Evren Hıncal said that the R0 value, which indicates the contagiousness of the COVID-19 outbreak, indicates that the number of cases in the community has increased at a certain rate. Stating that the number of R0 should be less than 1 in order to claim that the epidemic is under control, Prof. Dr. Hıncal noted that in the calculations made, the R0 value of our country was found to be 2.06 on September 15, 2020, and this value indicates that one person is currently transmitting the virus to 2 people. Prof. Dr. Hıncal stated that if the R0 value is less than 1, the epidemic will begin to be brought under control. Outbreak data in the country used … Stating that mathematical modeling has recently become a very important part of modern medical research, Prof. Dr. Hıncal said that the SEIR Model was used to calculate the R0 number of the corona virus. SEIR Model; The number of cases in the country was calculated by taking into account asymptomatic cases, those with mild and severe illness, those who died and those who recovered. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ: “We expect the number of cases to decrease as of September 22…” Near East University Vice Rector and Director of DESAM Institute Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said that they anticipate that the number of cases will decrease as of September 22 and the R0 value will decrease with the measures taken in accordance with the model and the people’s compliance with the rules. Stating that if the measures are not followed, the course of virus transmission may increase again. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ emphasized that in order to prevent the spread of the virus, it is necessary to continue to pay attention to social distance, hygiene and use of masks.

Covid-19 PCR Academy carried out at Near East University Hospital by Near East University Desam Institute…

Near East University represented in the 1st International Turkish, Literature, Culture and Education Symposium held online

Near East University Turkish Language Teaching Department faculty members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yeniasır and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Gökbulut participated in the symposium with their paper titled “A Look at Özker Yaşın’s Bayraktar Folk Song and Zafer (Victory) and Bağış (Donation) in Terms of Literary Text Relations – Historical Event”. “Literary works have great importance in the formation of national identity” Speaking to the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yeniasır and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Gökbulut briefly said the following: “Literary works have great importance in the formation of national identity. When the works written by artists such as Süleyman Uluçamgil, Ahmet Gazioğlu and Özker Yaşın in Turkish Cypriot literature are examined, it can be pointed out that they generally reflect the feelings and thoughts of the society they belong to, and the pain and troubles that the Turkish Cypriots have experienced during the time. It can be said that when Özker Yaşın’s plays Bayraktar folk song and Zafer (Victory) ve Bağış (Donation) are examined in the context of history-literature relations, they are mostly in line with historical facts. While establishing the events in both works on historical facts, Yaşın also took care to give the cultural characteristics of the period. Especially in the play named Victory and Donation, he also included some of the important poets, architectural structures and some details about the Ottoman Palace. Before starting to write his play titled Victory and Donation, he read everything about the Selim II period, Yasef Nasi, and the conquest of Cyprus, and thus Yaşın was very objective in giving the characteristics of certain historical figures such as Sultan Selim, Suleiman the Magnificent, Sokollu Mehmet Pasha, and did not hesitate to mention about the shortcomings of the mentioned figures or their mistakes. Özker Yaşın’s literary reconstruction of the conquest of Cyprus in 1571 and the pain and suffering of the Turkish Cypriots in 1958, can both be easily used as a complementary element in Cyprus history lessons. It can be said that both works of Yaşın will make an important contribution to the teaching of the history of Cyprus.

Corona Virus increases in young population, according to the research results of Near East University on COVID-19

Virus was detected in 71% of male Individuals. In the study conducted by the Near East University COVID-19 PCR Laboratory regarding the local contamination of the coronavirus, it was revealed that asymptomatic cases increase in the society, especially among young people. 52 positive cases were detected in the tests performed at the Near East University COVID-19 PCR Laboratory on samples taken at the Near East University Hospital between 13 July and 10 September 2020. 37 of the positive cases were male (71%), 15 of them were female (29%), and the average age was 31. According to the results of 11 thousand 660 tests performed in this period, the rate of positivity was found to be 4 per thousand. Although the detected cases show signs of asymptomatic or mild disease, it has been noted that these people carry a high amount of virus, and therefore the risk of transmission is high. Between1 July- 9 September 2020, in the tests carried out on persons who entered the country by air and sea routes from Turkey 65 people have been found positive. 46 of the positive cases were found to be males (70%) and 19 females (30%). According to the results of 31 thousand 523 tests performed during this period, the rate of positivity was found to be 2 per thousand. Virus Infection average age is 31… In the tests performed at the Near East University COVID-19 PCR Laboratory, it was found out that the average age of COVID-19 positive cases is 31. It was noted that the rate of young people among those caught in coronavirus is increasing and this rate is remarkable. In the statement, it was emphasized that young people should not underestimate the disease and that masks must be used, social distance and hygiene rules must be followed against the disease which may not reveal any symptoms. Attention must be paid to asymptomatic spread … Near East University COVID-19 PCR Laboratory experts pointed out that people who are infected with the coronavirus but do not show symptoms are at high risk of transmitting the disease, and noted that the risk of the rapid spread of the virus in the society is high by asymptomatic people who do not realize that they have the disease or those who survive the disease. Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ: “Precaution is a must among young people who can spread out the disease with no or mild symptoms and become infectious…” Near East University Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said that they carried out intensive studies at the Near East University COVID-19 PCR Laboratory and determined that, according to the test results, the rate of young people among those suffering from the coronavirus is gradually increasing. Stating that asymptomatic transmission is a very critical finding and one of the most important features about the pandemic, Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ stated that the risk of transmission is high, especially for those who carry the virus asymptomatically or those who recover after a mild process. Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “It is very likely that there will be cases that increase gradually among young people, who do not know about their disease, who have no symptoms and circulate in the society. Therefore, it is imperative not to let go of the measure. We can turn this process into our favor by paying attention to social distance, use of masks and hygiene, which are 3 important measures to prevent contamination. We must fulfill our responsibility both for sake of ourselves and for the society in a selfless way.”

For the Nicosia Walled City Museum, a group exhibition consisting of the works of 39 artists was opened on the 450th anniversary of the conquest of Nicosia on September 9

For the Nicosia Walled City Museum, the exhibition titled “450th Anniversary of the Conquest of Nicosia Group Exhibition consisting of the artworks of 39 artists from the Near East University Faculty of Fine Arts and the Turkic World was held. According to the information given by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Vice President of the National Council Mr. Zorlu Töre, Founding Rector of Near East University Dr. Suat İ.Günsel, institute directors, deans, academic staff and artists participated at the opening ceremony held at the Near East University Hospital Exhibition Hall. At the opening of the exhibition, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design and Exhibition Curator Prof.Dr. Erdal Aygenç, Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ made a speech. Prof. Dr. Erdal Aygenç; “I believe that art has strong ties with love, with falling in love.“ Exhibition curator Prof. Dr. Erdal Aygenç, in his speech, started by greeting the participants and stated that it was the opening of the 357th exhibition organized within the scope of the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts Project. He said; “Impressive speeches were made about art and the artist at each opening. Today I would like to borrow the words of a poet who says “to love is our only right” and to explain briefly what art is in another dimension. Because I believe that art has tight ties with love, art is the greatest freedom. Art is a purification that unites people with the treasures of the world. It is to wash the dirty hearts with rainwater, then rinse them with the wind of sincerity and wrap them in the smells of oleaster. It is to light candles from eyelashes and fingers in rooms whose lights are turned off and to watch the beauties shining with deep pleasure. It is to bless and glorify human dignity. It is the thinnest, strongest, always new, feeling of resistance against the destruction of the human soul by force, difficulty, and habituation. Art is the weasel stalk that we hold on to the edge of the abyss, the dizziness between death and life. It is a luminous shelter we create from heart palpitations against the black army of insensitivity. Art is the bed that repairs us, where our voices flow most quietly. Art is the middle name of peace. It is the common song of all languages. It is the whistling of our lips in the dark of the night. One of the environments that allow us to experience all these is undoubtedly museums. Near East University, which makes investments that will play a role in ensuring the integration of society with art and increasing the value given to art and artists, is adding a new one to its chain of museums, the “Nicosia Walled City Museum”. The artworks exhibited in this group exhibition will be exhibited at the Nicosia Walled City Museum. The museum, which will be put into service with the restoration of the Ziraat Bank building at the Kyrenia Gate with the initiative of the Günsel family, which values art and artists and cares for the integrity of the society, will mediate the sharing of Cyprus’s cultural identity with the national and international art scene. Visitors, who will enjoy historical values in the museum, will also have the opportunity to connect with their cultural roots. The works in the exhibition, which we will open soon, will also be exhibited in this museum. We would like to thank all Günsel Family, especially our Founding Rector Suat Günsel, who brought us such great happiness. We, as the Near East family (in science, technology, health, sports, innovation, culture, arts), are honored and proud to experience what others do not dare to imagine. I congratulate all participating artists and wish them a good time.” Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ; “Before the Ottoman State started the conquest of the island of Cyprus, it peacefully demanded the island that belongs to itself from the Venetians.” Vice-Rector Prof.Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ stated that Cyprus, which has been a center of attraction throughout history due to its special location in the Eastern Mediterranean, was squeezed between the Ottoman lands in the 16th century, and it was necessary to conquest the island for the security and domination of the region; Şanlıdağ continued as follows; “Therefore, the Ottoman Empire wants to conquest the island due to the political, economic, religious reasons and so on. Before the Ottoman State started the conquest of the island of Cyprus, it peacefully demanded the island that belongs to it legally from the Venetians. However, upon the negative response of the Venetian State, the Ottomans started the necessary preparations for the conquest of Cyprus and the Ottoman Navy set out from Istanbul and other centers in the spring of 1570 for the Cyprus expedition. The Ottoman Navy arrives in Limassol on 2 July. After the conquest of Limassol and Larnaca one day apart, it was time to conquest Nicosia, which is in the center of the island. The difficult siege of Nicosia, the center of the island, begins in mid-July. After a difficult and tiring month and a half, the Ottoman soldiers succeeded in conquering Nicosia on 9 September 1570. Lala Mustafa Pasha, the Commander of the Ottoman army, with the conquest of Nicosia, turns the St. Sophia Cathedral (Selimiye Mosque) into a mosque and performs the first Friday prayer here. With the conquest of Nicosia, the Cyprus Governorship was established and Muzaffer Pasha was appointed as the first Governor.
