Methods for coping with anger

Head of Department of Psychiatry of Near East University Hospital Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez He stated that anger, which is one of the basic instincts of man, can be taken under control by methods such as moving away from the environment, communication, social activity in life style, sports and hobbies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez: “Anger is considered as one of the basic instincts of human beings” Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez explained that anger and aggressiveness should be acknowledged as basic instincts of man, and that a person needs to learn to control their sense of anger and suppress it and direct it to more productive areas. In other words, she stated that there is a need for people to learn these basic instincts of man, to control the sense of anger, to suppress this feeling and to direct these emotions to more productive areas. Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez said: “In doing so, it does so under the control of our superior self or judge within us, including conscience. Although it does not have a mathematical unit, the strength, severity and size of the anger within us differs from person to person. It is also known that some people have little or none at all. This control can be very strict and very critical in some people. As psychiatrists, although we do not find it true that anger is not expressed at all, we also describe it in an uncontrolled and aggressive way as unhealthy.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez: “It is rather important to learn the mechanisms of coping with anger, as well as preventing this from turning into aggression.” She said that it is necessary to learn how to deal with anger, which is a part of life, and prevent it from turning into aggression. Furthermore, she stressed that the first step that can be taken by individuals on this subject is to realize the feeling of anger and to understand when, under what conditions it occurs. Moreover, she pointed out methods that can prevent anger from turning into aggression. She said: “However, anger often appears uncontrolled and unplanned. Once anger appears, moving away from the current environment or trying to divert it to another area may prevent this emotion from turning into aggression. In addition to moving away from the environment, it is possible to use some easy methods. These include breathing exercises, a punching bag method, and easy-to-do methods such as focusing on a neutral object or turning to another task. However, it is known that it is impossible to stop the anger once it is triggered and it may not be easy to prevent it from turning into aggression.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez: “Those with Anger Control Problems should seek help from an expert.” Making a statement regarding the matter, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez stated that other individuals who interact with the individual that has anger control problem also have certain duties to pursue. She noted that the most important behaviour that individuals who have problems with anger control should do is to seek help from psychiatrists who are professionals in this job. Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Sönmez there are techniques that psychiatrists use to manage anger. These include recognizing and interpreting behaviours, breathing exercises to relax, developing cognitive and behavioural exercises, humour and some other skills. Additionally, if found necessary, drug treatment may also be used. Measures that can be taken by individuals to anger their control First, describe the situations that cause anger in you. For this, note your feelings and thoughts about the situations in which you are angered, in what situations anger occur in you. When you get angry, try to change the environment you are in. For exampleyou’re your anger is caused due to a relationship with a friend, ask for permission and move away from there. If your anger comes as explosions, spread it over time to make it lighter and to occur in more suitable circumstances. If anger is about a specific object or situation, review what can be done about that situation or object. For instance, if anger is experienced with an emotional partner, learn effective communication methods. Include social activities, sports, hobbies in your life. Their presence in your life will contribute to your overall coping methods, thereby reducing your anger. Never hesitate to get help! Being angry may be coming from your biological predisposition. With this, a series of social and psychological factors and psychiatric disorders may have made the situation even more complicated. Consult a psychiatrist about the subject.
