The backbone of Health is Midwifery

Head Nurse of Near East University Hospital Türkan Şahin the roots of the midwifery profession went back to the beginning of humanity and initially, it was a profession passed from mother to daughter whereas now it has become a true profession needing much speciality. She expressed that the first tutor and trainer in mother and baby care are midwives; as well as being the first person to medically examine and provide care of the mother and baby. Head Nurse Türkan Şahin: “Midwifery is considered as the backbone of Health Care Services”. Head Nurse Türkan Şahin stated that midwifery profession dates back to the beginning of humanity and initially, it was passed from mother to daughter and nowadays, it has become an indispensable profession in the society with its mission to protect and raise family health around the world by becoming the backbone of health services. Head Nurse Türkan Şahin: “Midwives are the first tutor and trainer of Mother and Baby Care”. According to International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), midwifery is a profession that takes care of the woman before and after childbirth. Additionally, a midwife is the person who provides training on mother and child care; and in fact, the person who first examines the mother and the child. Furthermore, Türkan Şahin stated that trainings of midwives constitute the basic parameters of health services; such that they increase the live birth rate, decrease maternal and infant mortality rates, conduct vaccination and immunization studies healthy and decrease the sexually transmitted diseases. Also, midwives contribute to the formation of healthy generations by educating them and by taking part with the families before and after the birth. Head Nurse Türkan Şahin: “Midwives play an important role in providing training and counselling services in family planning”. Head Nurse Türkan Şahin asserted that the midwives observed the pregnancy and identify risky situations, follow the process of childbirth and monitor the child-mother health. Moreover, she said that midwives also provided training and counselling on pregnancy, birth and family planning. She ended her words by congratulating Midwives Week, which is on April 21-28, the invisible heroes who have the power to change a family’s world via a birth.

“Kazakhstan Artists Painting Exhibition” opened by Ersin Tatar, President of the National Unity Party

The “Kazakhstan Artists Painting Exhibition” consisting of 30 artworks exclusively created for the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts was opened by Ersin Tatar, the leader of the National Unity Party. According to the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, the opening ceremony of the exhibition was held at the Near East University Faculty of Medicine Exhibition Hall, and the National Unity Party Chairman Ersin Tatar, Kyrenia University Founding Rector Cemre Günsel Haskasap, Özay Günsel Children’s University Board of Trustees President Anna Günsel, Deputy Secretary General of the National Unity Party, Ahmet Savaşan, Cardiologist Assist. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kemal Günsel, vice rectors, deans, faculty members, artists and guests attended to the opening ceremony. At the opening of the exhibition, Dinara Nuger on behalf of the Kazakh artists and Ersin Tatar, the President of the National Unity Party, gave a speech. “We are happy to work on a beautiful campus as Kazakhstan’s painters…“ Dinara Nuger, who made the opening speech of the exhibition, stated that they are happy to take part in the exhibition as Kazakhstan artists. Commenting on the artists in the exhibition, Nuger said: “We come from different cities of Kazakhstan. Ainabek Ospanov is the honorary artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan and since 2015 he has been the director of the Turkistan Fine Arts Museum in Northern Kazakhstan. Since 1989 he has been a member and chairman of the Union of Kazakh Artists. Adilgal Bayandın participated in numerous symposiums and exhibitions during his art life, which he started in 1992. He organized over one thousand mastery workshops in Kazakhstan and abroad. Anara Aubakirova is the curator of different art projects. Aubakirova, who is a lecturer at the National University of Arts in Kazakhstan, has served in many exhibitions and art projects abroad. Our young talented artists Zhalyn Bauyrkan and Tolkyn Tebysbek are open to different colors and styles while keeping the reality in the foreground. Dinara Nuger is an artist and an art historian.” Dinara Nuger stated that they are pleased to work in a wonderful campus atmosphere with students from all over the world and expressed her gratitude to Dr. Suat İrfan Günsel and university employees. Ersin Tatar: “I congratulate the Near East University for its breakthroughs to Turkish Cypriot history…” Ersin Tatar, the President of the National Unity Party, also expressed his happiness to be present at an artistic event at the Near East University and said “We have been meeting with our relatives from Central Asia through these activities. The main ancestors of the Turkish Cypriots came from the Central Asia, and Kazakhs, Azeris, Kirghiz and Turkmens are always relatives. This kind of an event reflecting the roots of our history in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the fusion of cultures in the exhibitions is strengthening the bonds between us through a civilized behavior. The “Kazakhstan Artists Painting Exhibition” will be open to visitors from 08:00 to 16:00 until 13 May 2019 at the Faculty of Medicine Exhibition Hall.

World-Famous Botanical Garden Eden Project Specialists gave a seminar at Near East University

Catherine Cutler, the person-in-charge of the biome exhibition of Botanical Garden Eden Project where thousands of plant species collected from various parts of the world have been gathered in Cornwall city of the UK, and Michael Cutler, Botanic and Engineering specialist, gave a seminar at the Near East University. According to the press information given by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Department, the seminar was attended by the Vice Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt, Forest Office Director Ercan Poyraz, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture Prof. Dr. Zeynep Onur, Director of the Institute of Health Sciences Dr. Hüsnü Can Başer, Vice Dean Assist. Assist. Prof. Dr. Sema Uzunoğlu, Head of Department of Architecture Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kozan Uzunoğlu, Tashkent Nature Park representatives, Kleideskop Tourism Director, academicians and students. Catherine Cutler, the project supervisor of the Eden Project, stated that the Tropical Biome greenhouse had a domed greenhouse established on a closed area of 15590 m2 housing over 1200 plant species belonging to different regions of the world and that the visitors could observe the growing rubber, banana and bamboo plants in the facility. Botanic and Engineering Expert Michael Cutler, who is working in the Eden Project, gave information about irrigation, temperature and maintenance units of the Eden Project. The participants’ questions were answered at the seminar which attracted great attention. After the seminar, Vice Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt presented the Certificate of Appreciation to the experts and stated that they were honored to welcome them at the Near East University. Near East University Landscape Architecture Students will be able to conduct their Internship (Internship) in cooperation with Eden Project… Following the presentation of the Eden Project, the Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özge Fuller, announced that the students of the Faculty of Architecture, Department of Landscape Architecture will be able to conduct their internship studies within the body of the Eden Project for the 2018-2019 academic year. Assoc. Dr. Özge Fuller, announced that the students who have at least 2.72 CGPA academic success degree and also a good level of English, can make their applications to the Department. The Eden Project has international partners all over the world… The Eden Project, which is a gigantic botanic park established by a handful of volunteers in 2001, is one of the most beautiful botanical parks in the world today. Eden Project (Eden Project Limited), operated by more than five hundred people, including 7253 plant species and subspecies in the Eden Project Botanic Park, is the largest greenhouse in the world. The Eden Project executives work with various international partners to shape and build new Eden Projects in different parts of the world. They are currently developing three projects in China. One of the projects, Eden Qingdao, is working on water to show the importance of water for life in the world. There are similar projects in Australia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and the USA.

Having been organized by Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts in memory of the tenth death anniversary of İsmet Vehit Güney, one of the cornerstones of the Turkish Cypriot art of painting, the exhibition titled “To Exist with Art” was opened by TRNC Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman. The exhibition features 142 artworks created by 61 artists. The Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University released that Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman, Founding Rector Dr. Suat İrfan Günsel, Erhan Özkan; TRNC Chief Consul to Gaziantep, Ismet Vehit Güney’s family, Board of Trustees Chairman Associate Professor İrfan Suat Günsel, Rector Professor Ümit Hassan, vice rectors, deans, department chairs, faculty members, artists and guests participated in the opening ceremony of the exhibition titled “To Exist With Art” that realized at the Exhibition Halls of Cyprus Art Center that located in the foyer area of Atatürk Culture and Congress Center (AKKM). The opening remarks of the exhibition were delivered respectively by NEU Rector Professor Ümit Hassan, İsmet Vehit Güney’s daughter Nilgün Güney and Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman. Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan: “We attach special importance not only on quality education but also on art events…” Delivering the opening remarks of the exhibition, Near East University Rector Professor Ümit Hassan stated that they were experiencing a day existing with art with very valuable artists by underlining that Near East University, since her establishment, had attached a special importance on art along with education. “Near East University adopts it as a mission to mobilize all her possibilities to open new horizons for our country. In this regard, Near East University has put the wheels into motion to stake a claim on our cultural and artistic heritage. It is a pride concept to commence and sustain this mission by ensuring collaboration and support in all domains of art and culture and organizing national and international exhibitions, concerts, and events concerning with visual arts and performing arts and using all other communication mechanisms associated with arts. Günsel’s projects are the impetus of the selection of the plastic art products created by using painting, sculpture, printing and all other techniques. Qualifying the Turkish Cypriot painters as masters, Professor Hassan highlighted that Turkish Cypriot painters made their names known at international platforms through the color, pattern, and figurative, abstract and naive aesthetic synthesis in their works. Touching upon that the lifestyle of Turkish Cypriots that predisposed to music, theater, literature and other art fields had become evident via art of painting; Professor Hassan stated the art of painting started in Turkish Cypriot community towards the end of 19th Century. Talking about the characteristics of Turkish Cypriot artists and their paintings, Professor Hassan underlined that İsmet Vehit Güney was considered as the pioneer of Turkish Cypriot painting art. Delivering information about İsmet Vehit Güney, Professor Hassan stated that Güney was the winner of all important state awards and the designer of the flag of 1960 Republic of Cyprus. Herbarium Museum will be opened on 3 May… NEU Rector Professor Ümit Hassan continued his remarks by stating that Near East University Herbarium Museum, where almost 100 thousand plant species that collected as a result of 18 year efforts will take place, would be opened on 3 May 2019. “The museum, which is launched with the great efforts of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy, will shed light on many branches of science” noted he. Professor Ümit Hassan ended his remarks by touching upon the academic success of Near East University: “In terms of the scientific studies published in h-indexes that measure both the productivity and citation impact of the publications of a scientist or scholar, Near East University ranked the third place among universities in Turkey and the top among the universities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. “This is a significant proud success which does not only articulates the soul of the world of science and academic environments but also contributes to the morale of the public”. Nilgün Güney: “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this Honorary Exhibition to be realized…” Expressing that her father had an important place in Turkish Cypriot art history, İsmet Vehit Güney’s daughter Nilgün Güney stated that her father was the first Turkish Cypriot painter that opened the first painting exhibition in 1946. Nilgün Güney also voiced her wish for having a Turkish Cypriot art history book written. “His first exhibition attracted great interest and motivated him to continue his painting work. He opened his second exhibition at Victoria College for Girls during British Colonial Period. The governor of the period also visited the exhibition and bought one of his paintings. This reinforced his passion to continue the art of painting. He continued painting till the end of his life. When he died, he had a picture on his easel which was almost finished. Besides painting, he was interested in many art branches such as cartoon, advertising, graphics, photography, serigraphy and color-separation. He also wrote poems and stories. He lived his life as art on painting. We are proud of him. I would like to extend my appreciations mainly to the Founding Rector Dr. Suat İrfan Günsel for organizing this honorary exhibition in memory of my father, and to the artists who provided contributions to the exhibition with their valuable works” said she. Prime Minister Erhürman: “The Exhibition bears the Meaning of Fidelity…” Indicating that he felt deep respect and admiration for İsmet’s Vehit Güney’s memory and the beauties that he had created, Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman stated that they were experiencing another proud day of culture and art activities held by Near East University. “Indeed, a university trying to exist only via science is something like a bird trying to fly with a single wing. Cultural and artistic activities are also important for a university. In this context, Near East University has balanced science with cultural and artistic activities, and has lately activated the second wing in a dense manner and has made the university fly higher. This is praiseworthy. I keep a tap on the developments in this aspect with great happiness. The importance and meaning of this exhibition is that it bears the meaning of a kind of fidelity of the artists, who follow the lead of İsmet Vehit Güney, the first Turkish Cypriot pioneer painter. The solidarity and loyalty among the artists is something that should be underlined. Expressing that a society needs to be productive in order to survive, Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman ended his remarks: Existing by producing; art is the noblest, aesthetic and special form of surviving as a being by producing. Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences Presents 435 students with High Honor and Honor Certificates

Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences held an award ceremony where 435 students were awarded with high honor and honor certificates for their achievements during the 2017-2018 Spring and 2018-2019 Fall Semester. Herbarium and Natural History Museum founded in Near East University with More Than 10 Thousand Fossil and Geological Materials, Plant Species and Live Samples

The Herbarium Center, which has been working for 18 years by drying and storing the plant samples collected through scientific methods at the Near East University, was turned into a museum under the name of Cyprus Herbarium and Natural History Museum after the necessary legal permits have been obtained. According to a press statement released by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, the Cyprus Herbarium and Natural History Museum which will serve as a teaching and research center, has now been officially founded after obtaining the necessary permissions and approval of the Department of Museums and Antiquities. The Richest Plant Museum With 140 Cyprus-Specific and 19 North Cyprus-Specific Species… The museum, which has a great importance in environmental research, has more than 7 thousand varieties of plant species of 1500-1600 plants available in Cyprus. In addition, there are 140 species specific to Cyprus and 19 species of plant species that grow in the Beşparmak Mountains of Northern Cyprus. The Herbarium and Natural History Museum, which was founded in cooperation with centers in Turkey and other centers in the world, has been carrying out research in plant exchange. The museum, which carries the Ethnobotanical researches on the ways and methods of the people of Cyprus in using the plants, has examples of the plant species used in the gourd and sesta-basket making. Fossil and geological materials will also be exhibited in the museum… The fossils found in the island and some other geologically important materials are exhibited in the Cyprus Herbarium and Natural History Museum which has a rich collection of materials. The Museum that hosts plants and live species will be opened in April… Cyprus Herbarium and Natural History Museum, which is located in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Near East University, will open its doors to the public in the first week of May with more than 10 thousand plant species, mushroom varieties, live samples, marine algae and fossil and geological materials, offering a unique resource to researchers and will serve as a basic resource centre for researchers in biology, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, forests and more, and shed light on all researchers, plant collectors, students and scientists who will work on this subject.

The “Kazakhstan Artists Painting Exhibition” consisting of 30 artworks exclusively made for the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts by 6 Kazakh artists will be opened by Ersin Tatar, President of the National Unity Party. According to a press statement from the Near East University Press and Public Relations Department, the opening of the exhibition will take place on April 29, 2019, Monday, at 09.00 at the Exhibition Hall of the Faculty of Medicine. Kazakhstan Artists Painting Exhibition will be open to visitors between 08.00-16.00 until 13 May 2019. At the exhibition where the Kazakh Legends and Culture will be the main theme and artworks reflecting this theme will be exhibited with different styles of contemporary art as commented by Adilgal Bayandin, who is a member of the exhibition. Anara Aubakirova, who adopted the contemporary art style, reflected the formation of Turkish culture in an epic style as part of the exhibition. The graphic artist Tolkyn Тabysbek, who adopts reality and draws inspiration from the places he paints, presents his works in the genre of war, and Zhalyn Bauyrkan will show Kazakh myths and legends, while Dinara Nuger will present his works that combine different themes of life.

AKADEMİADA X. International Art Academy begins at Near East University

The Academiada (AcademyIsland) held annually by the Faulty of Fine Arts and Design, Near East University is organizing the 10th event in cooperation with the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts this year. The event will start on 29th April Monday. According to the press information provided by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, this year only the sculpture works will be produced throughout the international event of Akademiada that will last 15 days and participated by artists and academicians from leading universities. This will be the 10th of the art event. The Akademiada, which is also referred as the International Academy of Art, will host artists and academicians who are competent in their field; Ahmet Özer from Pamukkale University, Ceren Tekin Karagöz, Tamay Uysal from Akdeniz University, Oğuzcan Genç, Mukaddes Dönmez, Evrim Ergün, Raif Dimililer from the Near East University, and academician artists will take part in the workshops held by the Art Academy. The sculptures produced by the sculptors and academicians will be exhibited at the Near East University Hospital Exhibition Hall. The sculptures produced by 13 sculptors will be presented to the art lovers on May 13, 2019 at the Near East University Hospital Exhibition Hall. In addition to the artists who participated in the workshop of X. International Art Academy, Faruk Manici, Kübra Türkmenoğlu, Ferit Yazıcı, Özcan Karakoç, Ayhan Yılmaz from Hacettepe University and Nuriye Uz from Anadolu University will take part in the exhibition. Professor Dr. Sadıkoğlu: “Activities in the fields of art, education and health are important for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus…” Prof. Dr. Sadıkoğlu stating that the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts is now hosting the 30th exhibition, the Near East University has so far founded 7 museums. Prof. Dr. Sadıkoğlu said the Tatarstan and Kazakhstan painters, while reflecting the national spirit in a beautiful way, they successfully integrated their works into the international painting trends. Prof. Dr. Sadıkoğlu said “The artists of the two countries have captured the contemporary trend while reflecting the historical and ethnic style. In the works of Turkmen painters, sun and light are mostly reflected in yellow colors. The painters of Tatarstan reflected dark and blurred colors in their works. Ersin Tatar, stating that we are now meeting with our brothers from Tatarstan and Turkmenistan in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, said “Feeling this beauty is the greatest wealth. The root of all of us is Central Asia. The Turks came from Central Asia to Anatolia, and this morning we met with this community of relatives in this beautiful school of education. Organised by High Technology College (HTC) in Dubai, Near East University has been represented at the Advances in Science and Engineering Technology (ASET) 2019 conference series titled as “Engineering Innovations in Healthcare International Conference”. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Nar East University, Academic Member of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin made a presentation on `Assessment of Liver Cancer Therapy Techniques` and `Analysis of Colon Cancer Therapy Techniques`; whereas Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin made a presentation of `A Comparison of Pancreas Cancer Therapy Techniques`, Research Assistant Mustapha Taiwo made a presentation on `Evaluation of Sterilization Devices Used in Medicine`. It was pointed out that according to studies carried out by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin and Assist.
