Near East University’s Athlete Yusuf Yalçınkaya, who has been selected to compete in Turkish National Team, is on the way to Europe

Having been organized by the Turkish Athletic Federation, Seyfi Alanya Winter Throwing Championship was held in Mersin on 23-24 February, 2019. Our national and Near East University’s athlete Yusuf Yalçınkaya, who participated in the Championship and became the champ by achieving a discus throw of 55.75 meters, has been selected to Turkish National Team. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, Yusuf Yalçınkaya, as an athlete of Turkish National Team, will compete in the 2019 European Throwing Cup, which will be held in Slovakia on 09-10 March. NEU’s athlete Yalçınkaya expressed his happiness of becoming a champion in Turkey and having the opportunity to compete in Europe as an athlete of Turkish National Team. Ferhat Sakallı, Yalçınkaya’s trainer, stated that he firmly believed that Yalçınkaya would receive the positive results of his intense trainings and would return from Slovakia with medal.

Having been organized by the Near East University Hospital, Public Awareness Days for Arrhythmia, Hypertension and Diabetes have been realized for the People Living in the Famagusta Region

Aiming to raise public awareness for a healthier society, Near East University Hospital has organized Awareness Days for arrhythmia, hypertension and diabetes. Within the scope of the Awareness Days, Near East University Hospital has rolled up her sleeves to draw attention to the risk factors leading to arrhythmia, hypertension and diabetes. Within this frame, Near East University Hospital has initiated activities towards raising public awareness across the country. After realizing the first event of the Awareness Days in Güzelyurt, Near East University Hospital realized the second event of the Awareness Days in Gazimağusa (Famagusta). During the event, the residents of the region was provided with information about arrhythmia, hypertension and diabetes and their possible underlying causes as well as severe health problems that may be caused by such diseases and disorders. Tests, screenings and cardiologic examinations were provided for the residents who came to Gazimağusa Dispensary for control. People Living in Famagusta Region Attached Great Interest in the Event… The residents of the Famagusta Region, who came to Famagusta Dispensary within the frame of the Awareness Days for arrhythmia, hypertension and diabetes, were undergone some tests, screenings and examinations regarding arrhythmia, hypertension and diabetes and were examined by Dr. Ümit Yüksel, cardiologist at the Near East University Hospital. Some Types of Hearth Rhythm Disorders Increase the Risk of Stroke… Informing the people about the healthy living conditions and risk factors causing hearth rhythm disorders, cardiologist doctor Ümit Yüksel drew attention to arrhythmia, which is generally described as irregular hearth rhythms or palpitations. Underlining that some types of hearth rhythm disorders could be as significant and dangerous as to put the patient at risk of stroke, Dr. Ümit Yüksek stated that the people, who participated in the event, had undergone some tests, electrocardiography (EKG) and other cardiologic procedures to check for signs of heart disorders. Spec. Dr. Ümit Yüksek: “Some People Don’t Usually Have Any Symptoms, However, Hypertension is a Serious Disease That May Cause Other Vital Problems…” Expressing that a number of causes may lead to hypertension, Dr. Yüksek stated that hypertension was defined as chronically high blood pressure (>130 mm Hg or diastolic pressure >80 mm Hg), Spec. Dr. Ümit Yüksek stated that the vast majority of people who have hypertension did not experience any symptoms. “It is important to know that even very high blood pressure may not produce symptoms. It is usually diagnosed in a doctor’s office with a simple blood pressure measurement. Hypertension may cause vital problems including complications such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure if long-term hypertension is not appropriately treated. In order to prevent any of these complications, early measures should be taken for early diagnosis. It is important to have regular check-ups with your doctor. Hypertension is a common condition and, if caught, can be treated with medication to prevent complications” said he. Frequent Urination Is the First Sign of the Diabetes… Expressing that people with diabetes may be unaware that they have the disease, spec. Dr. Ümit Yüksek stated that insulin resistance may be developed in many people without experiencing any symptoms. “The early symptoms may not be noticeable without testing. The first sign of the diabetes is the wish for frequent urination. Diabetes can be diagnosed with simple blood tests. Your doctor can select one of four tests to assess if you have diabetes” noted he. Services Provided at the Famagusta Dispensary of the Near East University Hospital The Physician in charge of the Famagusta Dispensary, Spec. Dr. İlksoy İkibiroğlu delivered information about the health services offered at the Famagusta Dispensary, which has been in the service of public for 4 years. “In addition to emergency medical services that are offered 24/7, polyclinic services including Internal Diseases, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Obstetrics and Otorhinolaryngology (Ear Nose Throat) are also provided between 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays and between 08:00 and 13:00 on Saturdays. By making an appointment, patients can see a doctor at the respective section for medical examination, check-ups, tests and medical screenings. On certain days of the week, Orthopedics and Traumatology and Neurology services are available.” Underlining that the event was realized with great participation of the residents, Spec. Dr. İlksoy İkibiroğlu stated that the participants were not only informed about hypertension, diabetes and arrhythmia but also monitored via EKG and respective medical tests for the detection of the mentioned disorders. “The complaints and test results of each person were assessed together and each patient was informed about his/her condition and the treatment to be tailored for him/her” noted he.

Güzelyurt Kurtuluş Lisesi Students visit “Dr. Fazıl Küçük and National Struggle” Exhibition

Güzelyurt Kurtuluş Lisesi, upper secondary school in Güzelyurt, students visited the “Dr. Fazıl Küçük and National Struggle” exhibition held at the Cyprus Museum of Modern arts. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, during the visit to the exhibition which was held due to the 35th death anniversary of Great Turkish Cypriot Leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük, with 165 pieces of 92 different artists exhibited at the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts, the students were provided information regarding Dr. Fazıl Küçük and encounters of national struggle. “Everyone should visit the Dr. Fazıl Küçük and National Struggle Exhibition”… Accompanying the students from Güzelyurt Kurtuluş Lisesi, the History Teacher Rasim Taş, made a statement and expressed that Dr. Küçük was a significant figure who has made a great contribution to the Turkish Cypriot community and who played an important role for us all to reach these days. He stated that therefore, it was very important for students to get to explore around the exhibition. In addition to the above, he stated that it was very obvious that the exhibition was meticulously prepared and that everyone ought to visit this exhibition. Furthermore, Rasim Taş stated that everyone should visit the exhibition as this was an opportunity to get to know our past and comprehend the history of the Turkish Cypriots as it had been a very difficult one. He said that it was necessary to pass details of the past to the future generations and that if we did not teach our children history, we would raise youth who are unaware of reality. Exhibition of Turkish Artists’ 40 Paintings “Painting Exhibition of Turkish Artists” has been opened at the Near East University

15 Turkish Artists paintings, 40 pieces especially made for the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts, has been opened by the Minister of Health Dr. Filiz Besim. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the exhibition is held at the Near East University Hospital exhibition hall and Representative from the Nicosia Turkish Embassy, Minister of Health Dr. Filiz Besim, Founding Rector of Near East University Dr. Suat İ. Günsel, Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, Vice Rectors, Deans, Academicians, the Turkish Artists whose paintings are exhibited, and guests attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition. It was expressed that the Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, Turkish Artist Prof. Dr. Zafer Gençaydın, Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Dokak and Minister of Health Filiz Besim each made a speech in honour of the day. Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan: “With this exhibition, we are being fulfilled spiritually…” Making an opening speech, Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, expressed that everything was realised due to the support and opportunities provided by the Founding Rector of Near East University Dr. Suat İrfan Günsel. He added that they were highly honoured to be with the Turkish artists and that their valuable work fulfilled them spiritually. Furthermore, he referred to reflections regarding the dynamics and developments of the history of art on artists. In addition to the above, Prof. Dr. Hassan expressed that since 1960, there have been many changes, new approaches and new aesthetics triggering plastic dynamics. As for 1970s, an acceleration in artistic and cultural activities can be observed and moving further to 1980s, coerciveness can be seen. Later, he referred to the millennium which has significance for both the Turkish and the Turkish Cypriot artists. Prof. Dr. Zafer Gençaydın: “Art at Near East University is as significant as the foundation of the university…” In his speech, Prof. Dr. Zafer Gençaydın expressed that it was the third time he was coming to the Near East University and added that he was rather pleased to have come across the story on the foundation of the university and the founder of the university himself. He further stated that the integration of the mind with emotions was very important; pointing that a university not only needed to be the centre of science and education but also it needed to be the core of emotions and culture. Such that, aesthetic environmental organisation, statues, and locations are significant factors contributing to an individual as a whole. He emphasised that a pretty environment meant that the life lived there is also nice and stressed that in this regard, those at Near East University were lucky. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Zafer Gençaydın stated that making investment in art was at least as important as making investment in industry, and thus expressed great gratitude to Founding Rector of Near East University Dr. Suat Günsel and his team for their hospitability and making such significant investments in art. Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Dokak: ” The Condition of Being a Respectable University can be attained through owning a museum…” On the other hand, in his speech Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Dokak stated that he was honoured to be part of those who contributed to the Near East University Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts. He also stated that in order to be a well-respected university, there was a need to own a museum. Prof. Dr. Dokak also stated that once we compared 100 universities, it could be seen that all of these universities have museums, such as an Art Museum, History Museum, Nature Museum and museums alike. He also stated that universities were required to be not only sources where science is produced, but also be places which have the responsibility to pass on the accumulated knowledge to future generations via museums. In this regard, he congratulated the Near East University, emphasising that Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts was founded on strong foundations. Minister Dr. Filiz Besim: Near East University has no boundaries nor limitations, therefore I would like to congratulate the Near East University authorities for making such efforts to make significant realisations…” Making a speech, Minister of Health, Dr. Filiz Besim, Near East University did not know any limits on science and art, opening doors to people, including people of science and students, form all around the world to get together at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. She added that by doing this, Near East University was revealing to the world that science was made in the north of Cyprus and that people were educated prior to picking up their professions. Dr. Besim also expressed that for years and years, she had dreamed of having a contemporary art museum in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and therefore, highly valued the efforts of Near East University to establish a museum, proving to the world that Near East University not only provides quality education but also contributes to art. In addition to the above, Minister of Health Dr. Filiz Besim stressed that Near East University acted as a medium of communication with the world, and also made a significant contribution by offering an opportunity to pass accumulations of art to future generations. She stated that she fully supported this effort. Life at Near East University involves science and art hand in hand… It was pointed out that subsequent to the speeches made, Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan presented certificate of participation to the exhibition to the artists whose paintings were being exhibited at the exhibition. While being presented his certificate of contribution, İbrahim Çiftçioğlu made a short speech and said attributed life to a bird with two wings-one being art while the other being science. In this regard, Near East University had both of these “wings”; indicating that there was life at the university. It was said that this short speech received a lot of applause. Then, the ribbon cutting ceremony was realised and the exhibition was opened to be visited.

New Pharmacists set sails for the Working Life with a ceremony

2018-2019 Academic Year Fall Term graduates of Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy received their diplomas with a glorious ceremony held at the Orange Hall at the Faculty of Communication. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press & Public Relations Office of NEU, the graduation ceremony was realized with the participation of NEU vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, NEU Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Prof. Dr. Ihsan Çalış, department chairpersons, faculty members, graduates and their parents. The graduation ceremony began with a commemorative stand in silence for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük, TRNC Founding President Rauf R. Denktaş and all martyrs and followed by national anthem. Then, NEU vice Rector Professor Tamer Şanlidağ, Pharmacy Faculty Dean Professor Ihsan Çalış and on behalf of the graduates Hasan Şeker delivered the opening remarks. He wished success for the Graduates in their professional lives… Underlining the key role of pharmacists in achieving the optimal public health, Professor Ihsan Çalış stated that pharmacy was one of the professions, which always existed and functioned validly throughout human history and never lost its importance in the lives of societies. Indicating that they were bidding farewell the graduates of a long and dedicated academic year, Professor Çalış expressed his views: “As a member of Near East family and the Faculty of Pharmacy, I would like to express my gratitude to all of you. I firmly believe that NEU Faculty of Pharmacy has raised you well. Now, you are closing a page and opening a new one in your lives. You have successfully completed an important process in your life and you are starting a new road with a new energy, with high skills and knowledge that you have acquired throughout your education process. I believe that you will practice your profession responsibly with conscience, integrity, and dignity which are consistent with its values, ethical principles, and ethical standards. I congratulate all of you and your teaching staff who exerted great efforts to raise you in the best way and congrats to your parents who spared no sacrifices and supported you throughout your education. Near East University grounds on Producing Science and Transforming Scientific Data into benefit of society… In his opening remarks, NEU vice Rector Professor Şanlıdağ drew attention to the importance of universities in society and expressed his views: “From the time of Plato and Aristotle to the process extending today, universities have grounded their basis on philosophical principles of idealism. Universities are unique institutions that produce and disseminate information to society and integrate various components such as education and science within their bodies. “With her gigantic steps towards being a 4th generation university, Near East University aims to transform all scientific data obtained through academic studies, research and R & D activities for the benefit of society. Pharmacists have a key role in contributing to ensure the optimal public health. Human love is essential for ensuring a sustainable public health. I hope human love will guide your way while performing your jobs” said he. NEU vice Rector Professor Şanlıdağ ended his remarks by wishing success for the new pharmacists. “I owe Near East University a debt of endless thanks…” Delivering a speech on behalf of the graduates, Hasan Şeker expressed his views. “I feel the excitement of going back to my country and the sadness of leaving here. Throughout our education process, we faced bravely the hardships of life and regained our self-confidence. I wish success to all my friends in their new lives. I owe Near East University, my teaching staff and my parents a debt of endless thanks” said he. They have taken their first steps to practice their profession by swearing the Professional Oath… Following the speeches, the participants enjoyed joyful moments with the violin recital performed by Nina Kudret, faculty member at the Department of Music Teaching. Exhibition of 35 Artworks especially created by 5 Bashkortostan State Artists for Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts to be opened by UBP Chairman Ersin Tatar

The exhibition consisting of 35 artworks especially created by 5 Bashkortostan State Artists for the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts will be opened by UBP Chairman Ersin Tatar at the Near East University. According to the information provided by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, the opening of the exhibition consisting of 35 oil paintings of 5 state artists from Bashkortostan will take place on 27 February 2019, Wednesday, at 10:00 at the Exhibition Hall of Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre. 10-Day Symposium organized for the Exhibition… It was stated in the press info that the exhibition prepared by the painters of the Republic of Bashkortostan, which is known for the rock paintings worldwide, and the paintings were prepared as a result of a 10-day symposium. The exhibition will exhibit figurative examples of Bashkortostan oil painting which started to attract attention in the early 1920s. Bashkortostan culture, known for its well-known animal rock paintings, will be reflected in the exhibition and Bashkortostan art of oil painting will be introduced to art lovers.

The Selection Committee has determined the Winners of the Photo Contest themed “Turkish Cypriot National Struggle” that organized by Cyprus Turkish National History Museum and Considered 190 Photos Eligible to be exhibited

Cyprus Turkish National History Museum, which carries out activities within the body of the Near East University Education Foundation, has organized a photography contest themed on Turkish Cypriot National Struggle. The photographs submitted for the contest have been assessed by the Selection Committee and 190 photos have been considered eligible to be displayed at the exhibition titled “Turkish Cypriots National Struggle through Photos”. The Selection Committee has also determined the winners of the photo contest. The Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University released that the photographs deemed eligible for the photo contest would be exhibited at İrfan Günsel Congress Center on Tuesday, March 5, 2019. The winners of the photography contest will be announced during the opening ceremony of the exhibition. The participants whose photos considered eligible for the contest but not eligible for prize will be presented a Participation Certification. The participants that contested in the old photographs category will be presented a Certificate of Honor provided that their photographs are accepted by the Cyprus Turkish National History Museum. Jury’s Special Award will be given… The second category of the contest is a prize competition. The photographs presented for the contest have been assessed by the Selection Committee that determined by the Board of the Cyprus Turkish National Museum.. Photographs ranking the top three will be awarded. The first-placed photograph will be awarded with 3000Tl, the second-placed one will be awarded with 2000Tl and the third-placed one will be awarded with 1000Tl. The Selection Committee will also determine three contestants for honorable mention award and one contestant for jury’s special award. The names of the winners will be released during the opening ceremony of the exhibition. Hundreds of Photos have been submitted for the contest… Contestants have submitted hundreds of photos for the second category which is a prize competition featuring newly taken photos depicting places such as old military positions, trenches, historical places, old buildings and streets, tools and equipment specific to the national struggle years. As a result of the assessments of the Selection Committee, 95 photographs including the winning ones have been considered eligible for the exhibition. The Selection Committee have also selected 95 photos among the ones submitted for the first category of the contest which features old photos taken during the years of the national struggle. Thus a total of 190 photographs will be displayed at the exhibition titled “Turkish Cypriots National Struggle through Photographs”. Photographs to be displayed at the Exhibition have been determined by the Selection Committee Consisting of 5 Members… The Selection Committee of the photo contest themed “Cyprus Turkish National Struggle”, which is consisted of the members including Professor Ali Efdal Özkul, the Founding President of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Turkish National History Museum, Hikmet Uluçam, Photograph Artist and Graphic Designer, Mehmet Gökyiğit, Chairman of FODER (Turkish Cypriot Photography Association), Gazi Yüksel, NEU Faculty Member and Photograph Artist, and Musa Kayra, Illustrator and Photograph Artist, have determined the photographs to be displayed at the exhibition to be opened on Tuesday March 5, 2019. A bridge between the past and future will be established… The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Founding President of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Turkish National History Museum, Professor Ali Efdal Özkul stated that the photographs depicting the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence and freedom for years would be a key and light for the new generations. “The young generations need to know their past and history well before setting out to explore the future. 4-5 Age-Group Students of Gönyeli Fazıl Plümer Nursery School visited the Exhibition themed “Dr. Fazıl Küçük and the National Struggle”

Visitors from various parts of the society continue to visit the exhibition themed “Dr. Fazıl Küçük and National Struggle”, which was organized in memory of the 35th death anniversary of the Turkish Cypriot Leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük. Having been organized by the Cyprus Turkish National History Museum that carries out activities under the umbrella of the Near East University Education Foundation, the exhibition features 165 natural artworks created by 92 talented artists of our country. These distinguished artworks depict the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence and freedom and portrait the Turkish Cypriot Leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük, who devoted his life for his people. The Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University released that Gönyeli Fazıl Plümer Nursery School Students along with their teachers and school principal visited the exhibition at the Cyprus Art Center that located in Atatürk Culture and Congress Center (AKKKM). Canan Gürkan: “Our mission is to train our students by following the footsteps of our leaders… Highlighting that Dr. Fazıl Küçük was a great leader, who devoted his life for the Turkish Cypriot people’s existence and freedom, Gönyeli Fazıl Plümer Nursery School Principal Canan Gürkan stated that they were very affected by the exhibition adding that it was very significant trip for the students. “The exhibition presents an environment where Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence and freedom comes alive. Near East University Jiu Jitsu Team makes history at the “London Winter International Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship” by winning 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals

Participating in the championship organised by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) titled as the “London Winter International Open Jiu Jitsu Championship”, the Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Team won 2 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze medal on the first day of the championship, followed by winning another bronze medal on the second day making a total achievement of 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the London Winter International Open Jiu Jitsu Championship was held in the capital city London, England and completed over two days. On the first day, the Head Coach of Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Diogo Moraes Azevedo and Selman Özcan were rewarded Gold medals; whereas Dr. Aziz Suat Günsel and Dr. Ulaş Yavuz achieved Silver medals, and finally Deniz Erdağ won a Bronze medal. On the second day, Şirvan Akdemir won a bronze medal. NEU BJJ Team makes history with 2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze Medals… It was revealed that the London Winter International Open Jiu Jitsu Championship was held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre and a high number of athletes participated in the event. On the first day of the event, the Head Coach of Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Team, Diogo Moraes Azevedo, made a spectacular start and won the first Gold Medal of the day for Black Belt Adult Super Heavy Category. Furthermore, with Brown Belt Selman Özcan won a Gold Medal for the Master 2 Heavy Category. Moreover, competing as a Blue Belt, Dr. Aziz Suat Günsel won a Silver Medal at the Adult Ultra Heavy Category. In addition to the above, another Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Team member Dr. Ulaş Yavuz won a Silver Medal at the Blue Belt Master 3 Category. Also, Dr. Deniz Erdağ won a Bronze Medal for the Blue Belt Master 2 Middle Category. As for the second day of the Chmpionship, Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team Member Şirvan Akdemir won a Bronze Medal at the White Belt Adult Middle Category. Head Coach Diogo Moraes Azevado: “Our hard work paid off!”… Making a statement regarding the matter, Head Coach of Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Team, Diogo Moraes Azevado, expressed that they had long been preparing for the London Winter International Open Jiu Jitsu Championship in a very disciplined manner. He added that all the members of the team had been putting in a lot of effort, both prior and during the Championship. Such that the members of the team had to compete against highly skilled athletes coming from all around the world. As a result, Head Coach of Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Team, Diogo Moraes Azevado, proudly stated that their hard work had paid off bringing them outstanding success; 2 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals. Making further addition, Diogo Moraes Azevado stated that they were quite happy as the Near East University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (NEUBJJ) Team made history. He pointed out that they were determined to make greater achievements in future championships to be participated in and expressed sincere gratitude to Near East University authorities for their full support along the way.
