Another Example of Success from the Association of Dental Students of Near East University; Worldwide Research Exchange Program is being initiated

Near East University Dental Students Association is a full member of International Association of Dental Students (IADS) which represents the interests of more than 200,000 dental students worldwide. IADS Meeting is held annually and provides a scientific platform for dental students to exchange knowledge and experiences regarding dentistry at international level. This year, the F2F Meeting that organized by the Board of International Association of Dental Students (IADS) was held at the Near East University. At the end of the meeting, a decision enabling the dental students of Near East University to engage in Research Exchange Program worldwide has been accepted by unanimous vote. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, IADS Board Meeting was realized with the participation of IADS President Ave Pöld, Chief Editor Greta Kersyte, Secretary General Abanob Yosry, Treasurer Björn Bıerlich, and International Exchange Officer Mustafa Hacılar from Near East University Faculty of Dentistry. During the meeting, important decisions were taken regarding the future of the International Association of Dental Students, which serves as the only and principal representative body for dental students worldwide. As a result of the IADS Board of Directors Meeting held in the Rectorate Meeting Hall of the Near East University, it was unanimously agreed that Near East University would launch a Research Exchange Project for Dentistry students worldwide. Within this context, NEU Faculty of Dentistry students will be able to engage in research exchange program in universities across the world while dental students from different universities in other countries will be able to engage in scientific research studies at the Near East University. They were impressed a lot by the Research Projects carried out at the university… It was stated that IADS Board of Directors, who came to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to realize the Board Meeting at the Near East University, were impressed a lot by the research projects, quality in education and health services provided by the university. Considering the scientific studies carried out at the research centers of the university, stem-cell projects carried out at the Faculty of Dentistry, R&D projects in the field of dentistry, and other scientific activities at national and international platforms, the Board Members of IADS have confirmed the institutional compliance of the University for launching worldwide research exchange project. Extending their appreciations to Near East University Board of Trustees Chairman Associate Professor Irfan Günsel, the Board of Directors of International Association of Dental Students noted that the meeting that they had realized at the Near East University would take coverage in IADS Journal to be published in January 2019. All kinds of support will be provided… Near East University Student Dean Associate Professor Dudu Ozkum Yavuz stated that they would continue to support all student clubs and associations involved in scientific activities at national and international level. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ: “Students will be able to engage in research exchange programs in accordance with their relevant field… Evaluating the IADS Board’s decision taken at the Board Meeting of the International Association of Dental Students that held at Near East University, NEU vice Rector Professor Tamer Şanlıdağ stated that it was not only a decision enabling NEU dental students to engage in worldwide research exchange programs but also an important milestone making the name of Near East University known across the world as a university providing high quality education in line with the technological developments, through the most contemporary and high-tech equipped labs and research centers and innovation-oriented R&D projects. Underlining the importance of Research Exchange program in providing research opportunities, internship opportunities, and an effective communication network for dental students worldwide represented in the association, NEU vice Rector Professor Şanlıdağ noted that students studying at NEU Faculty of Dentistry would be able to engage in worldwide research exchange programs while dental students from the other universities in different countries would be able to come to Near East University to involve in scientific and theoretical research studies. Founding Rector of Near East University, Dr. Suat Günsel was given the “Turkey’s Greatest Living Minds Award” by Forbes Magazine which is one of the world’s most important business and economics magazines due to his investments in education, health, art and culture. According to a press info released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Dr. Suat Günsel was among the people who received the “Turkey’s Greatest Living Minds Award” given by Forbes Magazine to celebrate its 100th year anniversary to people who shaped the history of Turkey’s economy, left their traces and broke new grounds. According to information given by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, at the ceremony held at Istanbul Swissotel The Bosphorus to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Forbes Magazine and where the awards were delivered to the winners, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. GÜNSEL, President of the Board of Trustees of NEU, received the award on behalf of the Founding Rector Dr. Suat Günsel who transformed all the scientific data he obtained into the benefits of the community as well as transforming the university into a 4th generation university. Cyprus Turkish National History Museum, asks the Turkish Cypriot People about the Sculptures to take place in museum

It is reported that the sculptures of the names of the famous people of the Turkish Cypriot community who will take part in the Turkish Cypriot National History Museum, which will be opened in 2020 on the Near East University campus, will be determined through a survey. According to the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, sculptures of the famous people who who became the idols of the Turkish Cypriot Community in either social or political terms and left deep traces and memories in different stages of history will be exhibited at the National History Museum in order to introduce these people to the future generations. The figures, whose sculptures will be exhibited at the Turkish Cypriot National History Museum, will be determined as a result of a survey through which questions on this issue will be asked to the Turkish Cypriot Community, and as a result of the survey, the statues of the people determined by the society will be built. The names that have left traces in the Turkish Cypriot community will be immortalized… Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Founding President of Cyprus Turkish National History Museum, Prof. Dr. Ali Efdal Özkul stated that as the Near East University, along with the social and educational activities, with this step they will be delighted to pay the debt of the society to the people who left their traces in our history. Prof. Dr. Ali Efdal Özkul stating that as the Near East University they attach great importance to rooting in these lands, added that “However, no matter how much you try to take root in a place if you have broken out of your history, if your knowledge is not strong enough, your roots can not hold”. The archives of the Turkish Cypriot History Museum, which will open its doors to the visitors in 2020, will start with the conquest of Cyprus, which dates to 1570-71, continue with the British colonial period and the Republic of Cyprus and the period between 1955 and present will be the main theme of the National Struggle period… Historical documents, paintings, tools will be exhibited in the museum… At the museum, the audio visual materials depicting the periods starting from the very first days of the arrival of Turkish Cypriot people to the island, such as clothes, weapons, vehicles as well as historical documents, paintings and sculptures belonging to these periods will be exhibited. It is aimed to create a museum where the visitors of the museum, especially young people, will visit the place with enthusiasm and excitement in an environment that will allow them to comprehend their ancestors’ struggles.

Seminar on “Sexual Education in Early Childhood” held

“Sexual Education in Early Childhood” seminar was organized for prospective teachers by the Near East University Lifelong Education Center (YABEM) and Ataturk Faculty of Education and Department of Preschool Education. According to the press statement released by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, At the seminar held in the Atatürk Culture Centre and given by Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayten Düzkantar, the importance of organizing sexual education programs for children was emphasized. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayten Düzkantar stated that the aim is to enrich the achievements of prospective teachers through a seminar that includes the understanding on sexual development and privacy skills in early childhood. Asst. Prof. Dr. Düzkantar said, “I would like to congratulate all the participants who are in self-development efforts and thank the teacher candidates for inviting me in order to discuss about the five areas of development in children which will help them to be well-equipped teachers who can handle all of the five areas of development and gain the right behavioral patterns between development areas. Sexual Education in Early Childhood has an important role in development process… Dervişe Amca Toklu, Education Coordinator and Lecturer of Department of Preschool Teaching pointed out that sexual education in early childhood is of great importance for the healthy development of the child’s development process. The 6th Barrier Free Information Days was held….The Importance of Activities carried out for Accessible Information Services was emphasized

Near East University played host to the Barrier Free Information Days, one of the most significant events in TRNC that focused on raising awareness on barrier free life. The event provided platform to discuss the importance of accessible information in removing the barriers that limit the persons with disabilities in the society and ensuring an accessible and inclusive society for all. Organized by the Societal Research and Development Center that affiliated with the Center of Excellence, and Near East Institute in collaboration with the TRNC Prime Ministry Coordination Committee for Persons with Disabilities, the 6th Barrier Free Information Days was realized at the Near East University Grand Library. The event was participated by the Barrier-Free Information Platform of the Republic of Turkey, Günay Kibrit, President of TRNC Prime Ministry Coordination Committee for Persons with Disabilities, respective experts, associations, NGOs, representatives of public institutions and organizations, a large number of academics and students. The Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University released that the Chairman of NEU Board of Trustees, Associate Professor İrfan S. Günsel, and NEU vice Rector Professor Tamer Şanlıdağ also attended the event. The event provided a scientific platform to point out not only the importance of activities carried out in collaboration to raise awareness and ensure an accessible and inclusive society for the persons with disabilities but also the significant role of accessible information in this process. The event began with a moment of silence and followed by singing the National Anthem to which the students of NEU Atatürk Faculty of Education accompanied with sign language. Then, the Co-Chairperson of the Societal Research and Development Center, Professor Zehra Altınay, the Chairperson of Center of Excellence, Professor Nedime Serakıncı, and the Chairman of TRNC Coordination Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Günay Kibrit delivered a speech respectively. Emphasis was attached on the Importance of the Awareness for Accessible Information and Social Transformation… Underlining their commitment to exerting great effort for removing social, economic and attitudinal barriers that exclude the persons with disabilities from participating fully and effectively as equal members of society, accessing to basic resources, such as education, information technologies and other services, NEU Societal Research and Development Center Co-Chairperson Professor Zehra Altınay stated that they attached great importance on conducting project-oriented scientific studies aiming at raising awareness and ensuring collaboration for an accessible and inclusive life for all. Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay also said that they worked devotedly in the line with the university’s innovative research and development mission and generated scientific projects oriented to raising awareness for accessible information and providing contribution to social transformation. Expressing that they had been moving forward confidentially in collaboration with many institutions and organizations devoted to accessible and inclusive society, Professor Altınay underlined that their efforts towards being a model in adding value to the society in terms of awareness and scientific studies would be continuing as an act not in discourse. An Accessible and Inclusive Society should be ensured without otherizing the persons with disabilities… Underlining that they had been carrying out activities and generating scientific projects within the scope of Barrier Free Information Days, which has been organized annually by Near East University since 2013, Professor Serakıncı stated that they had provided not only various employment opportunities for persons with disabilities but also significant contributions to their lifelong learning skills through seminars and congresses. Highlighting the importance of an accessible and inclusive society in embracing all people regardless their physical limitations, disabilities and enabling them to benefit equally from all educational, social and employment opportunities as well as information technologies, Professor Serakıncı stated that a desired level couldn’t have been achieved yet despite the steps taken towards the goal. Indicating that children might be born with disabilities despite all the best efforts at prevention, Professor Serakıncı points out that the rate of persons with disabilities from birth in a society corresponds to 2-3% population of that society. She underlines that the rate of acquired disabilities due to other reasons such as accidents corresponds to 6% of the society. Professor Serakıncı highlights that we can’t see persons with disadvantages in our streets at that rate due to obstacles which have not been removed so far because of our impossibilities. Underlining that they had been carrying out activities including projects, workshops, seminars and congresses for raising awareness and ensuring accessible education, accessible tourism, accessible information and an inclusive life for the persons with disabilities since 2013, The Head of NEU Center of Excellence, Professor Nedime Serakıncı stated that they had achieved well-established collaborations with NGOs and state organs. Underlining NEU’s devotion to removing all barriers in all areas of our lives by using education in an effective and systematic manner, Professor Nedime Serakıncı indicated that Near East University had realized many activities regarding basic issues such as accessible campus, education, tourism, health, urban and inclusive society adding that they had shared the outcomes of these activities with the relevant authorities. Indicating that they provided contribution for ensuring an accessible and inclusive society without otherizing the persons with disabilities, Professor Serakıncı stated that Near East University had brought the Audio-library, Activity Center and Accessible Cinema into service as an indicator of her devotion to embrace persons with disabilities. Steps should be taken to create an Accessible and Inclusive Society… Highlighting the importance of collaboration in ensuring a barrier free life, TRNC Prime Ministry Coordination Committee Chairman, Günay Kibrit stated that the Coordination Committee, which was established to struggle for the disabled, could be effective in maintaining the collaborations and bringing the actions into life quickly. He underlined that the policies devoloped at the state level could be applied within this context. Mr. Kibrit noted that the issue was addressed and discussed delicately at the meetings held with state and governmental authorities adding that concrete steps had been taken towards creating an accessible and inclusive society. In his final remarks, he extended his appreciations to everyone who provided contribution. Students with special education need performed a dance and choir show… Following the opening speeches, Nicosia Education Center and Business Education Center Choir took the stage. The songs that sang in sign language by the students with disabilities received great applause from the attending body. Then, the dance team of Gazimağusa Special Education Center took the stage. The dance show performed by the students with special needs received great admiration and applause. Then, the students presented the handicrafts that they created with their hand labor to NEU Board of Trustees Chairman Associate Professor İrfan Günsel. The event was also interpreted simultaneously in sign language to persons with hearing disability. Successful Studies carried out in the field of information technologies and services for the persons with disabilities were addressed… Following the choir songs and dance show, the Head of Turkish Barrier Free Life Academy, Adem Kuyumcu delivered a speech on barrier free activities, accessibility, the rights of the persons with disabilities and proper communication. Mr. Kuyumcu addressed the significance of activities carried out by various sectors and associations for the persons with disabilities in Turkey and shared information regarding successful works carried out in the field of information technologies and services for the disabled. Within the scope of the 6th Barrier Free Information Days, a panel was held on TRNC barrier free activities and information science. Throughout the panel that curated by Prof. Dr. Fahriye Altınay, the projects and proposals of the associations and the scientific studies and perspectives of the academics were discussed. Bahire Çoşkuner Doğru, Melek Çaluda, Mutlu Soykurt, Sibel Dinçyürek and Mukaddes Demirok Sakallı were attended the panel as panelists. Near East University Double Champion in Cycling

Near East University Women’s and Men’s Cycling Teams became the champion in Interuniversity Cycling Races organized by the University Sports Federation on December 21, 2018. According to the information provided by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Department, Near East University Men’s Cycling Team consisting of Berkem Karayeğen, Öncel Üney, Berk Bağrıkara, Mazhar Moda, Tuğberk Kopca who was pedaling on a 10 km track from the American University roundabout to Eziç traffic lights became the champion with a score of 09.53.86, and Near East University Women’s Cycling Team consisting of Zekiye Yağmur Aydındağ, Sibel Haraç, and Dudu Asya Erokay, became the champion with a score of 10.23.51. Near East University Cycling Team Coach Zihni Üney; “It was an exciting race and this year we didn’t break the tradition, as was the case at the Near East University Cycling Team,” and congratulated the champions on the occasion.
