Academic Member of Near East University Specialist Gözdem İlkay gave a concert with Cyprus Chamber Music Orchestra

Academic Member of Department of Music Teaching of Near East University, Specialist Gözdem İlkay, gave a bicommunal chamber music concert at the Pallas Theatre, Southern Nicosia and European Union House, Cyprus. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and public Relations of Near East University, the concert was realised with artistic director of the orchestra Nihat Ağdaç and Natalie Neophytou, and 23 Turkish and Greek Cypriot professional musicians. Specialist Gözdem İlkay was the pianist of the bicommunal chamber music concert and played with the Cyprus Chamber Music Orchestra. It was stated that the pieces they played included J. S. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.3 G Major, T. Albinoni Concerto for 2 Oboes in F Major and W.A. Mozart Symphony No 12 G Major.

Record News from Near East University Swimmers Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy

Near East University’s swimmers Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy have set new TRNC records at Turkcell Long Course Meters (LCM) Turkish National Team Selections. Organized by the Turkish Swimming Federation in memory of Ümit Saka, Turkcell LCM Turkish National Team Selections started on 28th November in Istanbul and will last till 2 December 2018. Near East University’s athletes have left their marks at Turkcell LCM Turkish National Team Selections by breaking TRNC records The Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University released that Near East University was proud of the success of her athletes Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy who broke TRNC records at Turkcell LCM Turkish National Team Selections. It was stated that Doğukan Ulaç set new TRNC Record in 100m Freestyle with 00: 54.68 and Emre Ersoy set new TRNC 14-15-16 Age Record in 100m free-style with 00.57.53. NEU’s athlete Emre Ersoy will compete in 50 m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke on the 3rd day, 50m Backstroke on the 4th day and in 100m Butterfly on the 5th day of the competitions which will last five days. NEU’s other athlete; Doğukan Ulaç competed in 1500m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle (TRNC Record) on the 1st and 2nd days of the competitions. Ulaç will compete in 200m and 800m Freestyle on the 4th day and in 400m Freestyle on the 5th day of the competitions.

Unobstracted (Barrier-Free) Cinema and Activity Center established in cooperation with the Near East University Faculty of Communication and TRNC Telsim to open

The opening of the Unobstracted (Barrier-Free) Cinema and Activity Center, which will be held on Thursday, November 29 at 16.00, will be attended by the associations, institutions and organizations related to individuals with special needs in TRNC, as well as the officials of TRNC Telsim and Near East University. According to the press information provided by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, the Unobstructed Cinema and Activity Center established within the Faculty of Communication was designed to be used for a wide range of activities and it was planned in such a way to organize various types of cultural and artistic activities. The activity center, which has a cinema hall for 20 people, also has computers and equipment for individuals with different special needs and for the students of Near East University to carry out their education and training activities. Film Screening twice a month The barrier-free Cinema and Activity Center, which was established in cooperation with Near East University Faculty of Communication and TRNC Telsim, was planned to carry out activities for individuals with special needs and for film screening twice a month. The floor where the activity center is located at the Near East University Faculty of Communication has been designed in order to ensure that the disabled people can easily enter the building and to take advantage of the lounge and parking and other services. Exhibition of History of the Turkish Cypriot Struggle will be held on January 15th to commemorate the death anniversary of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, Former Turkish Cypriot Leader. Art lovers continue to visit the ’Republic Day Exhibition’ consisting of 103 artworks created by 38 artists with different techniques at the Cyprus Art Center, which is affiliated to the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts founded at the Near East University. Near East University, Department of Music Education Lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertem Nalbantoğlu attended the 25th Mus-E Conference in Switzerland as an Invited Speaker and Violinist

Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertem Nalbantoğlu, a lecturer of Near East University, Atatürk Faculty of Education, Department of Music Education, attended the 25 th Mus-e Conference in Bern, Switzerland as a guest speaker and violinist. According to the press info released by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, Ertem Nalbantoğlu attended to the conference, which was held at the Yehudi Menuhin Forum in Bern, Switzerlan, as the invited guest of Prof. Werner Schmitt, Vice-President of Mus-e Switzerland and made a presentation titled «Inclusive approaches: Cypriots and their common musical culture». After the presentation, he performed a mini recital with his Greek Cypriot counterpart Maria Demosthenous. In the conference attended by the world’s important community and artists, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertem Nalbantoğlu’s Recital Received Great Admiration. In the recital, the work of Cengiz Hakkı Eren, a faculty member of the Near East University, which was inspired from the folk song “Jasmine” and composed for the 25th Jubileunskonferenz und Festkonzerte for Bern, was performed. Then, Sadi Işılay’s composition, Sultaniyegah Sirto, was performed and received great admiration. Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy compete in Turkish National Team Selections

Near East University Athletes Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy have added to their successes. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, NEU’s swimmers broke new TRNC records in Men’s Star and Men’s Youth Republican Cup Championship that organized by Northern Cyprus Water Sports Federation (NCWS). Doğukan Ulaç broke TRNC record in 200m freestyle with 01.53.81 and NEU’s 4x50m medley team, in which Doğukan Ulaç took part, set new TRNC record with 01.53.57. NEU’s other swimmer, Emre Ersoy set new TRNC 14-15-16 Age Record in 50m backstroke with 00.28.66 and in 100m backstroke with 1.02.56. It was stated that Near East University athletes Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy along with their trainer Mehmet Gürcenk are leaving the island on 28th November to participate in “Turkcell Long Course Turkish National Team Selections”, which is held by the Swimming Federation of Turkey in memory of Ümit Saka between the 28th November and the 2nd December 2018. Moreover, it was revealed that Near East University athlete Emre Ersoy will be swimming 100m freestyle on the 2nd day; he will be swimming 50m freestyle on the 3rd day; 100m freestyle on the 4th day and 100 m butterfly on the 5th day of the competitions. On the other hand, Doğukan Ulaç will be swimming 1500 m freestyle on the 1st day; 100 m freestyle on the 2nd day; 200 m and 800 m freestyle on the 4th day;; and on the 5th day he will be swimming 400 m freestyle. It was stated that before leaving the island Near East University athletes Doğukan Ulaç and Emre Ersoy, who will be representing the Near East University abroad, visited the Head of Near East University Health Culture and Sports Office Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Atamtürk and expressed that their goal was to break new records and to become national team athletes.

Book titled “Psychological Processes From Birth to Death, Psychology” published with contributions of Near East University Lecturer Şebnem Güldal Kan

The book titled “Psychological Processes from Birth to Death, Psychology” was published with contributions of lecturer Şebnem Güldal Kan, who wrote the two chapters of the book. Şebnem Güldal Kan is a teaching member of the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Near East University. According to the press information provided by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, the book, which was edited by Mehmet Yapıcı and contributed by 14 academicians, contains chapters written by Şebnem Güldal Kan, the sixth chapter titled “The Nature and Development of Learning”, and the thirteenth chapter titled “Personality”. The Psychology Book consisting of 15 chapters; The social background of psychology and the historical development process, The scientific nature of psychology and the problem of the method, The nature of the behavior; The defense mechanisms on case studies; The sensory and perceptual processes;The nature and development of learning, memory: lightness of forgetting or the weight of remembering?; Cognitive psychology, intelligence and human; Development from birth to Death; Necessity of Motivation; Stress and Life; Personality, Psychological Disorder and Life; and Applied Analysis on Therapy Processes. The Book was contibuted by Cafer Yılmaz, Davut Hotaman, Fatma Kırımlı Taşkın, Gökçe Kurt, Gülden İrevül Kızbes, Meral Kılıç, Miray Özözen Danacı, Neşe Başak, Özge Pınarcık, Selin İkiz, Şeyda Uncu, Yasemin Kılıçgün Dilekay and Zahide Tonga. The Life-Long Developmental Process of Human Beings examined Lecturer Şebnem Güldal Kan, a teaching staff of Near East University, Ataturk Faculty of Education, Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling, stated that the life-long developmental process of human beings is mentioned in the chaptes she wrote and published in the book. Şebnem Gül Dal Kan noted that: Life-long development in terms of the developmental perspective of human beings is the determinant of the personality development in every period of life, from the fertile to the dead.” Şebnem Güldal, at the end of her speech, thanked all those who contributed to the publication of the book.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel: “We are progressing on our path to be 4th generation university through our mission in freedom in science…” Near East University researchers received “Research Awards” during 2018 at 7 international, 1 national congresses for their researches conducted in the fields of Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary, Nursing, Mathematics and Psychology. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Near East University researchers were awarded for their verbal and poster presentations at 1st International; 3rd International Birth Preparation Education and Congress; 54th National Psychiatry Congress; 2nd International Veterinary Microbiology Congress; 38th International Congress on Turkish Microbiology; 23rd Meeting on Herbal Pharmaceutical Raw Materials; 2nd International Cell Death Research Congress; 7th EKMUD International Congress and Workshop on Neurodegeneration/Neuroregeneration.  Furthermore, the NEU researchers also made a new discover and discovered a new spider species in Northern Cyprus and made a great contribution to world literature. He added that the success achieved was due to the ownership young scientists took of their university. In addition to the above, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel stated that they, as a university, were obliged to provide a scientifically consistent and qualified education to the community and the world in general. Furthermore, he added that researchers were the ones who kept a country continue developing; such that although the main source of income of the country was tourism, the success of the Near East University researchers actually contributed to the prestige and the promotion of the country. He expressed that each award received by the researchers of a university was an indication of how well a university was functioning. Prof. Dr.  Kaya Süer, Assist Prof Dr. Bilgen Kaymakamzade, Research Assistant Farouk Tijani Saad, Research Assistant Nazife Sultanoğlu titled as “Using a Mathematical Model to Analyse a HIV Epidemic in Cyprus” received The Best Research and Best Oral Presentation award. Named as Günselorum in Literature… As a result of the fieldwork of Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel and Assoc. Prof Dr. Özge Özden Fuller in Beşparmak Mountains a new spider species was discovered, unique to Cyprus, and was added to the literature under the name ‘günselorum’.

Award for the Second Best Oral Presentation goes to the Near East University at the 2nd International Cell Death Research Congress

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Keram Teralı, lecturer of Near East University Faculty of Medicine was awarded the second best oral presentation at the 2nd International Cell Death Research Congress. According to the information provided by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, at the 2nd International Cell Death Research Congress organized by the Association of Cell Death Research Association (Izmir), the Near East University Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prof. Kerem Teralı and Assoc. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören presented a verbal presentation, and Prof. Günsu Soykut and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eda Becer made a poster presentation. Distinguished scientists from Turkey and abroad attended the congress, focusing on the issues such as oxidative stress and cell death, biomaterials that mimic the cell microenvironment, immunity and inflammation, stem cell therapies, system biology, genome regulation and other new technologies used in cell death research. Dr. Kerem Teralı’s study titled ““Identification of the FGFR3G380R Mutant as a Likely Cause of Psychomotor Delay in an Achondroplastic Child: A Combined Clinical Exome Sequencing and Biomolecular Modeling Approach” within which he modelled mutant fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 associated with achondroplasia (hereditary disproportionate dwarfism) , was awarded the second best oral presentation. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören’s oral presentation titled “New Surprises from an Old Anti-Apoptotic Gene: Pleiotropic Effects of PPARA Variants in a Hematological Disorder” within which he first time focused on the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha variants, which he associates with beta-thalassemia, also attracted attention. The effect of Bitter Almond Blossom and Babutsa Seed Oil on Colon Cancer Cells attracts attention… Dr. Günsu Soykut ‘s verbal presentation titled “Colchicum pusillum Extract-Induced Apoptosis in Colo-741 Metastatic Colon Cancer Cells via Extrinsic Pathway” through which she explained how the Cyprus bitter almond extract activates process of death of metastatic colon cancer cells. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eda Becer’s poster presentation titled focusing on the “Apoptotic Effects of Opuntia ficus-indica L. Seed Oils on Colon Adenocarcinoma Cell Lines” and investigating the lethal effects of seed fats of babutsa/papoutsosyka on colon cancer cells was also appreciated by the congress participants.
